Description

Guigal Ermitage Ex Voto 2003 is a monumental red Hermitage from one of the Rhône Valley’s benchmark producers, crafted in an exceptionally hot and ripe vintage. Drawn from some of the appellation’s finest, old-vine parcels, this pure Syrah is made only in top years and shows the power, depth and longevity that have made Ex Voto a modern icon. The 2003 vintage, in particular, has gone down in Rhône history for its concentration and opulence, and this wine captures that character in an especially luxurious, ageworthy expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2003 Ex Voto Ermitage Rouge is intensely deep and opaque, moving from black-purple at release toward a saturated garnet-ruby rim with age. The nose is intensely complex and layered: you can expect waves of blackberries, blackcurrants and crème de mûre, alongside notes of smoked meat, black olive tapenade, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and sweet spice from luxurious oak. With time in the glass, more savory tones emerge—graphite, roasted herbs, cracked pepper and a hint of game. On the palate, this is full-bodied, richly textured and concentrated, a quintessentially powerful Northern Rhône Syrah shaped by the warmth of 2003. Ripe black fruit is framed by velvety but substantial tannins and well-integrated oak, giving a mouth-coating, almost creamy density without losing its Hermitage structure. Flavors of cassis, plum compote and macerated black cherries mingle with espresso, smoked bacon, leather and mineral notes from the granite slopes. The finish is very long, with lingering dark fruit, spice and a subtle saline, stony edge. While now showing evolved tertiary complexity, top bottles of 2003 Ex Voto can still have excellent aging potential, especially from good cellars—expect a drinking window that can comfortably stretch two decades or more from the vintage, with peak enjoyment for many now and in the near future.

Production
Ermitage Ex Voto Rouge comes from selected, low-yielding Syrah parcels on the historic Hermitage hill in the Northern Rhône, planted primarily on steep, sun-drenched granite and mica-schist slopes with patches of clay and limestone. These poor, well-drained soils and the intense 2003 growing season produced small, highly concentrated berries. Grapes are usually harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification typically involves traditional Northern Rhône methods: destemming (often full or near-full), followed by a long maceration and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks to extract color, tannin and flavor. The wine is then aged for an extended period—often around 30–40 months—in largely new French oak barrels, which contributes to its polished texture, spice complexity and remarkable capacity to age.

Food & Serving
This is a powerful, structured Hermitage that shines with equally robust, savory cuisine. Think classic pairings such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison or game birds, duck confit, or a rich daube provençale. It also works beautifully with grilled ribeye, short ribs, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms, truffles or black olives. Mature hard cheeses—such as aged Comté, Beaufort or a well-aged cheddar—are excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large-bowled glasses to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting is strongly recommended: give younger or still-robust bottles 2–3 hours, while mature examples can benefit from a gentle 60-minute decant to open up without losing their more delicate, evolved notes.

Producer
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, the Guigal estate has become one of the Rhône Valley’s most influential and respected producers. Now run by the second and third generations of the family, Guigal is famed for elevating the reputation of Côte-Rôtie and for producing some of the region’s most sought-after wines, including the legendary single-vineyard “La La” bottlings. Their expansion into Hermitage, and the creation of Ermitage Ex Voto, underlined Guigal’s ambition to craft top-tier, collectible wines from the Northern Rhône’s greatest terroirs. Known for meticulous vineyard sourcing, rigorous selection and long, careful élevage, Guigal has earned critical acclaim worldwide and plays a central role in defining the modern, ageworthy style of premium Rhône Syrah.
