Description
E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 2001 is one of the Northern Rhône’s most coveted Syrah-based wines, drawn from the steep Côte Brune slopes and crafted in tiny quantities. Its hallmark is the distinctive blend of power and perfume, with a touch of Viognier adding lift and complexity to a wine already known for its depth and intensity. Acquired by Guigal in 1985, La Turque has become a modern benchmark for Côte-Rôtie and one of the estate’s most celebrated single-vineyard cuvées.
Tasting Notes
This vintage pours a deep, concentrated colour and shows an impression of youth despite its age, with the kind of dense, brooding presence that signals a long life ahead. The nose is still tightly wound, opening gradually to espresso, creosote, roasted fruit, dark berries, fig, liquorice, mineral tones, and layered notes of spice such as anise and basil.
On the palate, it is massive, structured, and firmly tannic, yet wonderfully precise, with fresh acidity giving the wine tension and balance. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, and this is a wine built for patience: while already complex, it should continue to evolve beautifully over the next 20–25 years.
Production
La Turque comes from the steep, rocky terroir of Côte Brune in Côte-Rôtie, where the vines cling to exposed slopes that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. The blend is typically around 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, reflecting the traditional style of the appellation and adding both structure and aromatic finesse. Harvesting is necessarily manual due to the extreme terrain, and the wine is vinified with Guigal’s meticulous approach to preserve power, precision, and aging potential.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C and decant several hours before drinking to allow the wine to slowly open. Its dense structure and savoury complexity make it a superb match for roasted lamb, game, venison, grilled beef, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as hard aged cheeses. For the best experience, give it time in the glass—or time in the cellar.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most respected names in the Rhône Valley, founded in 1946 and widely admired for elevating the reputation of both Côte-Rôtie and the broader Northern Rhône. The estate is especially famous for its prestigious single-vineyard wines, including La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque, which have become reference points for the region. Over the decades, Guigal has built a reputation for consistency, depth, and age-worthy wines that regularly earn critical acclaim worldwide.
