Description

Guigal’s Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2019 is a striking, full-bodied red from one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected estates. Built on power, precision, and remarkable aromatic depth, it captures the classic grandeur of Côte-Rôtie with a modern sense of balance and finesse. This is a wine with clear cellar-worthy ambitions, drawing on the long-standing prestige of the château site and Guigal’s reputation for crafting some of the region’s most celebrated wines.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intense in the glass, this 2019 shows the dark, polished profile you would expect from a top Côte-Rôtie. The nose is layered with black cherry compote, crushed violets, pencil shavings, cedar, and liquorice, with earthy and meaty nuances adding further complexity. On the palate, it is bold and concentrated yet impressively refined, combining ripe fruit, freshness, and a powerful structure that feels both commanding and balanced. The tannins are gripping but mature, suggesting that the wine should be given several more years in bottle before it reaches its best. With proper cellaring, it has the potential to develop beautifully through to at least 2040, gaining more savoury detail and harmony over time.

Production
Produced in the northern Rhône’s Côte-Rôtie appellation, this wine comes from a terroir known for steep slopes, old vines, and a mix of schistous soils that help drive concentration and finesse. The result is a wine shaped by excellent natural drainage, strong sun exposure, and the cooling influence that preserves freshness in the fruit. Harvesting is typically carried out carefully by hand on these demanding hillside vineyards, with vinification aimed at extracting depth while preserving elegance and aromatic purity.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roasted lamb, game birds, beef fillet, venison, or rich dishes featuring mushrooms and truffle. It also pairs beautifully with slow-braised meats and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for several hours is strongly recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine’s structure and aromatics to fully open.

Producer
Guigal is one of the landmark producers of the Rhône Valley, founded in 1946 and widely regarded for elevating the reputation of both Côte-Rôtie and the broader region. Over the decades, the estate has become synonymous with precision, depth, and longevity, earning international acclaim for its top cuvées. Château d’Ampuis is one of Guigal’s most distinguished wines, reflecting the house’s dedication to excellence and its deep connection to the historic Côte-Rôtie terroir.

The iconic producer Guigal's own Château! Owning a "Château" in the Rhône Valley is a story in itself. This family has been making wine for many years now, producing everything from entry Côtes du Rhône wines to the "La's" vineyards. This is master-level produced Syrah with a little bit of Viognier, a classic wine!
