Description

Guigal’s Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2013 is a standout expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most prestigious sites, combining depth, perfume, and remarkable finesse. Sourced from a historic estate that helped define the modern reputation of Côte-Rôtie, it captures the appellation’s signature blend of power, elegance, and smoky mineral character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an opaque ruby color with a dense, impressive presence. The nose is layered with smoke, spice, ripe red and blue fruits, olives, and violet, all lifted by a subtle smoky-mineral edge. The palate is deeply flavored yet vibrant, with a polished, velvety texture carrying blackcurrant, boysenberry, and floral notes. It finishes long and refined, with sweet dark berry echoes and dusty tannins that suggest excellent aging potential over the next decade or more.

Production
Côte-Rôtie is a steep, granite- and schist-driven terroir in the northern Rhône, where sun-exposed slopes and varied exposures help produce wines of intensity and aromatic precision. Château d’Ampuis comes from selected parcels around the historic estate, with harvest typically carried out carefully by hand to preserve fruit quality. Vinification is geared toward extracting concentration while maintaining elegance, followed by élevage in oak to build structure and complexity.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with lamb, duck, game birds, braised short ribs, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully open.

Producer
Maison Guigal is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected producers, founded in 1946 and widely credited with elevating the reputation of great northern Rhône appellations around the world. The family is especially renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, long élevage, and benchmark wines from Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, and Hermitage, with Château d’Ampuis standing among its most celebrated cuvées.
