Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso Superiore 2023 brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese in a distinctive expression of Tuscany’s Bolgheri coast. Founded in 1977, Grattamacco was among the area’s early wine estates, and its choice to include Sangiovese gives this Superiore a character that connects international varieties with local tradition.
Tasting Notes
Deep in colour, the wine opens with concentrated aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark cherry, layered with balsamic herbs, Mediterranean scrub and a hint of graphite. On the palate, lively acidity balances ripe dark fruit and velvety tannins, while mineral, tobacco and subtle toasted notes carry through to a long finish.
Its firm structure and freshness suggest good potential for further ageing in bottle. Enjoy it now after allowing it time to breathe, or cellar it to let the fruit, tannins and savoury nuances develop.
Production
The estate’s hillside vineyards benefit from a mild Mediterranean climate and soils rich in calcareous sandstone and clay. Grapes are hand-harvested, then spontaneously fermented with native yeasts in small open wooden vats and macerated on their skins for extended extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in first- and second-use barrels, followed by 12 months of bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for about an hour to let its aromas unfold. Its structure and savoury depth pair well with grilled or roasted red meat, game, slow-cooked dishes and aged hard cheeses.
Producer
Established in 1977, Grattamacco is a pioneering estate in Bolgheri, a Tuscan coastal region known for structured, age-worthy red wines. The estate has a long-standing commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Its hillside vineyards and distinctive blend, which includes Sangiovese alongside international varieties, give its wines a clear sense of place.
