Description

Graham's The Stone Terraces Vintage Port 2017 is one of the Douro’s true collector wines, here offered in an impressive 2.25 L format – perfect for the cellar or a special occasion. Sourced from a tiny, historic parcel of terraced vineyards, this is a profoundly structured, age‑worthy Port that has already turned critics’ heads, including a 98/100 score from Wine Enthusiast. Produced predominantly from Touriga Nacional and bottled after 18 months in seasoned oak, it combines classical power with remarkable finesse and concentration.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Stone Terraces shows an opaque, inky purple core with a narrow, vibrant rim that hints at its youth and density. The nose is initially reserved, then slowly unfurls with layers of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, wild blueberry, and dark plum, supported by notes of crushed violets, graphite, licorice, and subtle cocoa and spice from seasoned oak. On the palate, this is full-bodied, tightly coiled and immensely concentrated, with rich, ripe black berry fruit wrapped in powerful yet super-fine tannins. The texture feels almost silken on the second approach, carrying intense dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, and a savoury, mineral edge that reflects the stony terraces. The high but balanced acidity cuts through the richness, giving lift and energy to the intensely structured core. At this stage, the wine is notably closed in terms of expressive fruit, but the depth, muscle and persistence are astonishing, promising dramatic evolution. Properly stored, this Vintage Port has decades of life ahead and should begin to really blossom from around 2028, continuing to gain complexity for 30–50 years or more.

Production
The Stone Terraces bottling is drawn from a specific, steeply terraced parcel at Graham’s flagship estate in the Douro Valley, where vines cling to narrow, stone-walled socalcos that capture and radiate heat, aiding perfect ripening of Touriga Nacional and other classic Douro varieties. The schistous soils, dramatic slopes and intense sun exposure create naturally low yields and exceptional concentration. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness and traditionally trodden in lagares to extract colour, tannin and flavour with precision and finesse. After fortification with high-quality grape spirit, the young Port matures for around 18 months in seasoned oak vats, preserving purity of fruit while allowing the components to knit together before bottling unfiltered as a declared Vintage Port.

Food & Serving
This powerful, young Vintage Port is best paired with richly flavoured, mature cheeses such as Stilton, Serra da Estrela or aged cheddar, as well as dark chocolate desserts, flourless chocolate cake, or desserts featuring blackberry or plum. For a more traditional Portuguese match, try it with dried fruits and roasted nuts after a leisurely meal. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, a slow decant of 4–6 hours is highly recommended to help it open up and to separate any sediment. As the wine gains bottle age, a shorter decant of 1–2 hours will usually be enough to reveal its complexity without losing delicacy.

Producer
Graham’s is one of the great historic names of the Douro, founded in 1820 and long recognised as a benchmark producer of premium Port. Now under the stewardship of the Symington family, who have been making Port for multiple generations, Graham’s has played a central role in elevating the reputation of Vintage Port worldwide. Their holdings include some of the region’s finest vineyards, notably Quinta dos Malvedos, whose dramatic stone terraces inspired and supply this rare, single-parcel bottling. With a track record of acclaimed Vintage Ports and limited, highly sought-after releases like The Stone Terraces, Graham’s is widely regarded as a reference estate in the Douro, with 2017 even cited by Charles Symington as possibly the greatest Port he has ever made.
