Description
Graci Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is a vivid expression of Etna’s volcanic slopes, made from Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio. It stands out for its elegant structure, mineral tension, and unmistakable sense of place, capturing the cool, high-altitude character of one of Sicily’s most prized cru sites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a ruby-red color with subtle garnet reflections. The nose is inviting and layered, with blackberries and blackcurrants leading the way, lifted by floral violet notes and a fine hint of bay leaf.
On the palate, the wine is structured yet supple, with clearly defined, well-integrated tannins and a savory, mineral-driven finish that lingers beautifully. Its balance of fruit, freshness, and volcanic depth suggests excellent aging potential, allowing it to gain complexity over time.
Production
Feudo di Mezzo lies on Etna’s northeastern slope near Passopisciaro, at around 600 to 700 meters above sea level, where the vines grow in dark volcanic soils that are sandy, stony, limestone-free, and rich in iron and nitrogen. The vineyards benefit from a typical mountain Mediterranean climate, and careful vineyard management with controlled yields helps preserve precision and concentration.
Harvest takes place in mid-October. In the cellar, fermentation begins spontaneously with native yeasts in large wooden vats, followed by extended skin maceration without temperature control and a spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in large oak casks and finished with a period of bottle aging, preserving the purity of the fruit and the authentic volcanic character of the site.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food-friendly red that pairs especially well with roasted meats, grilled lamb, mushroom dishes, game birds, and Sicilian-style fare such as eggplant, tomato-based pasta, and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C; decanting for about 30–60 minutes can help open up the aromatic detail and soften the tannins in its youth.
Producer
Graci is one of the most respected names in modern Etna wine, known for its focus on native varieties, low intervention, and a deep respect for the mountain’s diverse volcanic terroirs. The estate has helped define the contemporary reputation of Etna Rosso through wines that combine elegance, purity, and site expression, earning strong recognition among lovers of terroir-driven Sicilian reds.
