Description

Giovanni Rosso Barolo La Serra 2020 is a finely etched, vineyard-designate Nebbiolo that showcases the elegance and verticality of one of Barolo’s classic crus. Coming from high-altitude La Serra, this is a Barolo that favors perfume, finesse and clarity over sheer power, making it especially captivating in the balanced 2020 vintage. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it offers a precise snapshot of top-tier Barolo terroir in a beautifully accessible style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo La Serra shows a luminous garnet core with a brick-tinged rim typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose opens with lifted aromas of rose petals, violet, and fresh red cherry, framed by notes of blood orange, raspberry, licorice, and a subtle hint of dried herbs and spice. On the palate, this is a finely structured, medium to full-bodied Barolo with a poised, linear profile. Juicy red fruits, wild strawberry and pomegranate are layered with anise, savory tobacco leaf, and a touch of sweet baking spice from large cask aging. The tannins are firm yet finely grained and chalky, giving the wine energy and grip without heaviness, while vibrant acidity keeps everything taut and mouthwatering through a long, mineral-etched finish. Enjoyable in its youth with ample aeration, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for 12–18+ years in a good cellar, gaining complexity, truffle, and forest-floor nuances over time.

Production
La Serra is a high-lying Barolo cru, known for its calcareous marl, sandstone and poor, stony soils that naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic intensity. The exposure and elevation help preserve freshness and highlight Nebbiolo’s floral, red-fruited character. Grapes for Giovanni Rosso’s Barolo La Serra are typically hand-harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness and careful bunch selection. After gentle crushing and destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with an extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma without harshness. The wine is then matured slowly in large, traditional Slavonian and/or French oak botti, allowing it to develop depth and complexity while respecting the purity of the vineyard’s expression.

Food & Serving
Barolo La Serra 2020 is a superb partner for rich yet refined dishes such as braised veal shank (osso buco), roasted lamb, truffle risotto, tajarin with ragù, wild mushroom pastas, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also shines with game birds and slow-cooked beef. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant—mainly to remove sediment—will usually suffice.

Producer
Giovanni Rosso is a respected, family-run Barolo estate based in the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, long regarded as one of the region’s most prized communes for Nebbiolo. The Rosso family has farmed vineyards in Barolo since the late 19th century, but it was under the guidance of Giovanni’s son Davide that the estate began bottling under its own name and quickly rose to prominence for its precise, terroir-driven wines. Today, Giovanni Rosso is known for an impressive collection of cru bottlings that highlight the nuances of individual sites, with a focus on traditional methods, meticulous vineyard work, and restrained oak. Their Baroli are frequently praised by international critics and collectors alike for their balance of authenticity, elegance, and aging potential, securing the estate’s place among the leading producers in Piemonte.
