Description

Giovanni Rosso Barolo 2021 is a poised and classically styled Barolo that captures the finesse of Serralunga d’Alba and the freshness of a cooler, elegant vintage. It’s a Nebbiolo that combines aromatic precision with a finely etched structure, offering both immediate charm and serious cellaring potential. This is Barolo for those who appreciate detail: lifted florals, vibrant fruit, and a long, composed finish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Giovanni Rosso Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with the characteristic brick-tinged rim that hints at Nebbiolo’s transparency and finesse. The nose is clear and finely drawn: floral notes of violet and dried rose petals lead, followed by hints of cherry in liqueur, star anise, dried leaves, mulberry and blackberry. Subtle spice and a faint earthy undertone give the wine complexity without heaviness. On the palate, it is elegant yet firmly structured, with a fine-grained tannic frame that supports rather than overwhelms. Red and dark berries mingle with savory notes of dried herbs and tea leaf, evolving in the glass with every swirl. The tannins are polished but present, promising a graceful evolution over time, and the finish is long, linear and refined, with lingering floral and anise accents. Enjoyable now with aeration, this 2021 has the balance and acidity to age beautifully for 10–15 years or more under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Giovanni Rosso’s Barolo is sourced from high-quality vineyards in the heart of Barolo, with a strong presence in the limestone- and clay-rich hills of Serralunga d’Alba—one of the area’s most esteemed crus for structured, long-lived wines. The vines grow on steep, well-exposed slopes that provide excellent drainage and a long, slow ripening season for Nebbiolo. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, Giovanni Rosso adheres to a traditional yet precise approach: extended maceration on the skins to capture Nebbiolo’s aromatic detail and tannic backbone, followed by aging in large, neutral oak casks that enhance texture and complexity without masking the purity of fruit or terroir. The result is a Barolo that is both authentic and finely tuned to the nuances of the vintage.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes. Think braised veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked beef or lamb, ragù over fresh egg tajarin, porcini risotto, truffle dishes, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Piedmontese toma. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as the wine matures, a shorter decant will be sufficient simply to let it breathe.

Producer
Giovanni Rosso is a respected, family-run estate based in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most revered villages. The Rosso family has cultivated vines there since the late 19th century, but it was under Giovanni and, later, his son Davide that the estate became a benchmark for classically styled, terroir-driven Barolo. Known for meticulous vineyard work and a strong commitment to expressing individual crus, Giovanni Rosso has earned a reputation among critics and collectors for producing Barolo that is at once traditional, elegant and precise. Their wines are widely regarded as some of the purest interpretations of Serralunga’s powerful yet finely structured character.
