Description
Gianfranco Soldera Case Basse Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2001 is one of the most revered wines ever produced in Montalcino. Made at the legendary Case Basse estate, it represents Soldera’s uncompromising vision of Brunello: purity, elegance and an expressive sense of place rather than sheer power or extraction. The 2001 vintage is regarded as a classic year, and this Riserva has achieved near-mythical status among collectors and serious wine lovers.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a mature ruby-red colour, with evolving garnet tones at the rim. Its bouquet is remarkably complex, revealing ripe and dried cherries alongside dried rose petals, violets, spices, tea leaves, leather and balsamic nuances. With time in the glass, notes of forest floor, wild herbs and mineral tones emerge, adding further depth and detail.
On the palate, the wine is intense yet exceptionally refined. Layers of red fruit, spice and floral character are carried by vibrant acidity and silky, finely integrated tannins. Despite more than two decades of maturity, it retains impressive energy and precision, balancing concentration with elegance. The finish is exceptionally long and complex, and the wine should continue to evolve beautifully for many years when properly stored.
Production
Produced exclusively from Sangiovese at the Case Basse estate in Montalcino, this Brunello reflects Soldera’s meticulous, terroir-focused approach. The estate is known for careful vineyard management, low-intervention winemaking and a preference for allowing the fruit’s natural character to guide the process. The wine was matured patiently before release, giving its aromatic complexity, seamless texture and remarkable longevity time to develop. As with any mature, minimally handled wine, gentle treatment and proper storage are especially important.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C in a large Burgundy-style glass to give its layered aromas room to unfold. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended, although older bottles should be opened carefully and assessed gradually, as they may benefit more from gentle aeration than prolonged exposure. Its refined structure and savoury complexity make it a superb match for Florentine bistecca, roast game, braised beef, wild mushrooms, aged Pecorino Toscano and other richly flavoured Tuscan dishes.
Producer
Founded by Gianfranco Soldera, Case Basse has become one of the most iconic estates in Montalcino. Soldera established a distinctive philosophy centred on respect for nature, meticulous vineyard work and wines of transparency, finesse and extraordinary ageing potential. Rather than pursuing maximum extraction or overt oak influence, the estate became celebrated for Brunello that expresses elegance, balance and the character of its site. The 2001 Riserva stands among the estate’s most sought-after releases and is widely regarded as a benchmark for traditionally minded, age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino.
