Description

Giacomo Conterno’s 2020 Francia Barbera d’Alba is a benchmark expression of Barbera from one of Piedmont’s most revered estates. Sourced from the famed Francia vineyard, this red marries richness and precision in a way that few Barberas can match, offering both immediate charm and serious depth. The 2020 vintage has already been hailed as one of the finest recent editions of this cuvée, with a captivating, almost irresistible personality in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Francia Barbera d’Alba shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with purple reflections, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered: super-ripe dark cherries and blackberries mingle with notes of pomegranate, lavender, violet, and hints of exotic spice. Subtle undertones of crushed stone, licorice, and a touch of savory herb add complexity as the wine opens with air. On the palate, this Barbera is rich, full-bodied, and packed with flavor, yet impeccably balanced by lively acidity. Juicy black and morello cherries, dark plum, and pomegranate core fruit drive the mid-palate, supported by fine, polished tannins and a sense of vertical energy that is very much in the Giacomo Conterno style. The finish is long and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of spice, floral lift, and a gentle, almost saline minerality. While already thrillingly drinkable in its youth, this 2020 has the structure to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
The Francia vineyard, located in Serralunga d’Alba in the heart of Piedmont, is a steep, south- and southwest-facing site with calcareous clay and marl soils that yield naturally concentrated, vividly structured wines. Barbera grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve their hallmark acidity and depth of fruit. In true Giacomo Conterno fashion, the winemaking is minimalist yet exacting: careful selection in the vineyard and cellar, followed by a traditional vinification with extended maceration to extract color, aroma, and texture. The wine is then aged in large neutral botti, allowing it to develop complexity and harmony without overt oak influence, so that the character of Barbera and the Francia terroir remain front and center.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet finely tuned Barbera d’Alba is a natural match for rich, savory dishes. Think braised beef or veal, ragù-based pastas, roasted lamb, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes and classic Piedmontese fare like brasato al Barolo (or Barbera), tajarin with ragù, and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine’s dark fruit, florals, and spice to fully unfurl, especially if enjoyed within the first few years after release.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most iconic names in Piedmont and a reference point for traditional, ageworthy Barolo and Barbera. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate rose to international fame under Giacomo and later his son Giovanni, whose unwavering commitment to quality and classic methods helped define the region’s reputation for great, long-lived wines. Today, the domaine is led by Roberto Conterno, who continues this exacting legacy, working some of the most prized vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, including Francia and Cerretta. Known for low yields, strict selection, and long, traditional aging in large casks, Giacomo Conterno consistently produces some of the most sought-after wines in Italy, with the Francia Barbera d’Alba standing as a gold standard for what the Barbera grape can achieve at the highest level.

The wines of Giacomo Conterno are highly sought after everywhere, whether Nebbiolo or Barbera. As a Barbera fan, the elegance of the fruit is convincing. Juicy, balanced and yet fresh.
