Description
Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru 2013 is a refined expression of one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most admired premier cru vineyards. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it combines the finesse and fragrance the appellation is known for with the depth and precision that have made Domaine Ghislaine Barthod a benchmark in the Côte de Nuits.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2013 vintage shows a graceful, elegant profile shaped by the cool growing season. Expect lifted aromas of red berries such as raspberry and red currant, layered with rose petals, violets, and a discreet spicy note. On the palate, it is lively and beautifully balanced, with bright acidity, fine tannins, and a silky texture that carries a distinct mineral edge.
The finish is long and poised, with the vineyard’s limestone-driven character adding clarity and persistence. While already expressive now, this wine has the structure and aromatic detail to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years, developing greater complexity, earthiness, and nuance with age.
Production
Les Charmes lies in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, where limestone-rich soils and an excellent vineyard exposure help produce Pinot Noir of exceptional delicacy and perfume. The grapes were hand-harvested from this premier cru site, then gently pressed before undergoing traditional vinification with natural fermentation. The wine was matured in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, to add subtle depth without masking the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is an elegant red Burgundy that pairs wonderfully with roast poultry, duck breast, veal, mushroom dishes, and lightly gamey fare such as quail or pheasant. It also works well with earthy vegetarian dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. Serve at around 15–17°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening young to allow the aromas to open fully.
