Description

Fosso Corno Montepulciano MAYRO 2021 is a deeply colored, expressive red from the coastal hills of Abruzzo, crafted entirely from the Montepulciano grape. Named after the Italian word for “black”, MAYRO hints at the wine’s intense, dark hue and generous fruit concentration. Produced on a single 30-hectare estate overlooking the Adriatic Sea, it showcases the modern, quality-driven face of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo while remaining true to the region’s rustic charm and tradition.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, MAYRO 2021 lives up to its name: an opaque, near-black core with a deep ruby rim and a vivid, youthful sheen. The nose is generous and inviting, marked by ripe plums and black cherries, layered with notes of blackberry compote, sweet spice and a subtle whisper of vanilla and toasted wood from its time in large oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, velvety texture. Flavors of juicy dark fruits—brombeeren (blackberries), plums and black cherry—are framed by soft, rounded tannins and a gentle, warming spice. The oak is well-integrated, adding structure and a touch of smokiness without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long and flavorful, with a lingering note of dark fruit and sweet spice. While crafted to offer great pleasure in its youth, this 2021 has enough fruit and tannin to develop nicely over the next 3–5 years, gaining additional softness and complexity.

Production
The Fosso Corno estate sits on a hilltop in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo, with 30 hectares of vineyards enjoying excellent exposure and cooling breezes from the nearby Adriatic Sea. The clay-limestone soils and sloping terrain give natural concentration to Montepulciano while preserving freshness and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested at optimal ripeness to capture depth of color and richness of flavor, often picked by hand to ensure only healthy clusters reach the cellar. In the winery, the must undergoes fermentation and maceration designed to extract color and soft tannins without harshness. MAYRO is then matured for 6–8 months in large 1,500-liter oak casks, a traditional format that allows gentle oxygen exchange and subtle wood influence while keeping the focus firmly on the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Montepulciano is a natural match for hearty, flavorful dishes, particularly autumnal and winter fare. Pair it with grilled or roasted chicken, pork chops, sausages, meat-based pasta, or richly seasoned beef—such as braised short ribs, steaks, or a rustic ragù. It also works beautifully with pizzas topped with cured meats and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and spice. A short decant of 30 minutes can help the aromas open up, especially in its youth, but the wine is approachable straight from the bottle.
