Description

Fontanafredda Barolo Riserva 2016 is a commanding expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most historic estates. Produced only in the finest vintages, this Riserva showcases the depth, structure and longevity that have made Barolo a benchmark for great red wines. With six years of aging in large oak casks, it emerges as a refined, complex wine that beautifully balances power and elegance. Only the best grapes from the estate’s most favorably exposed vineyards are selected in years when nature truly excels, making this a rare and collectible bottling. Rooted in the traditions of Barolo and the long history of Fontanafredda, the 2016 Riserva captures the classic character of an outstanding vintage in Piemonte.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Fontanafredda Barolo Riserva 2016 shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange hues at the rim, a hallmark of well-developed Nebbiolo. The color already hints at both its ageworthiness and its evolving complexity. The nose is layered and refined, opening with aromas of dried roses, violet, and tar, followed by ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and blood orange. With air, it reveals notes of leather, tobacco, licorice, cedar, truffle and a subtle spice from long cask aging. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely etched, with firm, noble tannins and a vibrant, persistent acidity that drives the wine forward. Flavors of cherry, dried plum and red currant intertwine with savory hints of earth, truffle, underbrush and sweet spices, leading to a long, resonant finish marked by mineral and balsamic notes. The 2016 vintage is renowned in Barolo for its balance and structure, and this Riserva is built for the long haul. While already approachable with proper aeration, it will continue to develop tertiary complexity for at least 15–20 years from the vintage, gaining even more nuance and harmony over time.

Production
Fontanafredda’s Barolo Riserva 2016 comes from estate vineyards in the heart of Barolo, in the rolling hills of Piemonte where marl, clay and limestone-rich soils, combined with cool continental breezes, create an ideal terroir for Nebbiolo. The vines are planted on well-exposed slopes that receive excellent sunlight, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly while retaining acidity. Harvest is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, ensuring that only perfectly mature, healthy bunches are selected for this Riserva. After gentle pressing and a traditional, long maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatics, fermentation takes place under controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for a minimum of six years in large Slavonian oak casks, a classic Barolo approach that promotes slow oxygen exchange and integration without overwhelming the wine with new oak flavors. A further period of bottle refinement follows before release, so the wine reaches the market with added complexity and a degree of maturity.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Riserva 2016 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes and earthy flavors. It pairs beautifully with braised beef, osso buco, lamb shank, game meats, truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, aged Parmigiano Reggiano and hard alpine cheeses. For the best expression, serve at 18°C (about 64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow the bouquet to fully open. Decanting is highly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours if enjoyed now, and even longer if you prefer more aromatic lift and softer tannins. As the wine breathes, its floral, spicy and tertiary notes will unfold, rewarding a patient, contemplative tasting.

Producer
Fontanafredda is one of the most storied names in Barolo, with roots dating back to the 19th century when the estate was founded by Italy’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele II. Located in Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of Piemonte’s Langhe hills, Fontanafredda has long played a key role in shaping the reputation of Barolo on the world stage. The winery combines deep respect for tradition—such as the use of large oak casks and extended aging for its top wines—with a modern commitment to quality in the vineyard and cellar. Over the years, Fontanafredda has earned recognition for its consistent, terroir-driven wines and for helping to preserve and promote the character of Barolo and Nebbiolo. The Riserva bottlings represent the pinnacle of the estate’s production, released only in exceptional vintages as a testament to both the land and the house’s enduring legacy.
