Description

Figli Luigi Oddero Barolo Vignarionda 2018 comes from one of Barolo’s most revered crus, delivering a powerful yet finely etched expression of Nebbiolo. This is a site-driven wine that marries depth, longevity and precision, crafted in a distinctly traditional style. For collectors and serious Barolo lovers, it offers a classic interpretation of Vignarionda in a structured, ageworthy 2018 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Vignarionda shows a luminous garnet core with brick‑tinged edges, characteristic of fine Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose opens slowly but confidently with layers of rose petals, violet, dried cherries and blood orange, followed by hints of liquorice, cedar, tobacco leaf and earthy mineral tones that speak clearly of Serralunga d’Alba. On the palate, this Barolo is firm and vertical, with a finely chiselled tannic structure wrapped around flavours of red currant, sour cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate. Subtle notes of tar, sweet spice, dried herbs and iron‑tinged minerality emerge with air, giving both complexity and tension. The acidity is bright and refreshing, extending a long, savoury finish. Still youthful, it will benefit greatly from further cellaring; expect a drinking window of 2025–2040 and beyond under good conditions, with tertiary notes of truffle, leather and forest floor developing over time.

Production
Vignarionda is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most prestigious crus, known for its calcareous clay and sandstone soils, excellent south to southwest exposures and a slope that ensures ideal drainage and slow, even ripening. Figli Luigi Oddero works these vineyards with close attention to the health of the soil and the vines, using careful, predominantly manual work in the rows and a strict selection of bunches at harvest. Grapes are hand‑picked at optimal ripeness, then traditionally vinified with a long maceration on the skins to fully extract Nebbiolo’s aromatics and tannins. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled tanks, followed by extended ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine to mature gently and preserve the integrity of the cru’s character without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for richly flavoured dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), osso buco, roast lamb, game birds, and truffle‑accented cuisine. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino, or classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with meat ragù or mushroom risotto. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to allow the bouquet to fully unfold. Decanting for 1.5–3 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics; older bottles should be decanted more gently and for a shorter time.

Producer
Figli Luigi Oddero is a historic Barolo family estate, rooted in the Langhe and closely linked to the traditional identity of Piedmontese wine. Based in the heart of Barolo country, the Oddero family has been cultivating Nebbiolo for generations, helping to define the classic style of the region long before Barolo became an international icon. The Figli Luigi Oddero branch continues this heritage with an emphasis on top vineyard sites, including crus such as Vignarionda, and a cellar philosophy that favours time‑honoured methods over fashion. Their wines are widely respected for their purity of fruit, clear expression of terroir and impressive ageing capacity, making the estate a reference point for lovers of traditional Barolo.
