Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga 2023

Fèlsina’s Chianti Classico Berardenga 2023 is a single-varietal Sangiovese that captures the lively, savoury character of Castelnuovo Berardenga in southern Chianti Classico. Made by a winery devoted to Sangiovese since its first vintage in 1967, it balances vibrant fruit with fine tannins and a long, spice-laced finish.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with aromas of wild berries, joined by hints of leather, menthol and fresh spice. The palate is balanced and structured, with fine, integrated tannins and a persistent finish recalling liquorice and tobacco.

Production
The grapes come from Fèlsina’s ventilated, mainly southwest-facing slopes at 320–420 metres in Castelnuovo Berardenga. The varied soils include limestone-rich alberese and galestro, with sandstone and silt nearer the Crete Senesi. Sangiovese is harvested in separate passes to suit the different vineyard elevations, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with 12–15 days of skin maceration. The wine matures for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and previously used smaller barrels, followed by additional ageing before release.

Serve with grilled or roasted red meat, game or mature cheeses, whose savoury flavours complement the wine’s wild-fruit and spice notes. Enjoy at around 16–18°C; a short decant before serving can help the aromas open up.

Founded in 1966 in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Fèlsina has championed Sangiovese since its first vintage in 1967. Its estate vineyards surround a historic medieval property, and their limestone- and galestro-rich soils contribute to the distinctive earthy, spicy character of its wines.
