Description

Elio Grasso’s Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most prized Barolo crus. Produced in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Langhe landscape, it combines the power and elegance that have made Barolo one of Italy’s most celebrated fine wines since the 19th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect the classic deep garnet hue of young Barolo, with a bright, transparent core that hints at its finesse rather than sheer weight. The bouquet is typically layered and complex, offering notes of red cherry, rose petal, dried herbs, licorice, and subtle earthy spice, with oak lending a gentle frame rather than dominating the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is structured and expressive, with firm yet finely grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savory finish. The Nebbiolo character should unfold gradually, revealing red fruits, floral nuances, tar, and mineral notes as it opens. While 2022 may already show some accessibility, this is a Barolo built for patience and should develop beautifully over many years.

Production
Casa Matè comes from south-facing vineyards in Monteforte d’Alba at 300–350 meters above sea level, where calcareous, clay-leaning soils with layered marl and sand give the wine both structure and aromatic lift. The vines are trained in Guyot and planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare, encouraging concentration and balance. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand in the second half of October, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aging in Slavonian oak casks, with further cellaring after bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve this Barolo with rich, flavorful dishes such as braised beef, veal shank, truffle risotto, game, or mature hard cheeses. A serving temperature of 16–18°C is ideal, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if the wine is enjoyed young, to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.

Producer
Elio Grasso is one of the respected names in Barolo, known for crafting wines that faithfully reflect the terroir of Ginestra and the surrounding hills of Monforte d’Alba. The estate sits within the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato UNESCO wine landscape and has built a strong reputation for precision, balance, and age-worthy Nebbiolo. Over the years, the winery has become a benchmark for elegant, site-driven Barolo from Piedmont.
