Description

Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2024 is a feather-light yet intensely flavored German white that captures the classic, cool Nahe style. Sourced from the steep, slate-laced Leistenberg vineyard above the village of Oberhausen, it balances crystalline fruit purity with vibrant acidity and low alcohol. This is a textbook Kabinett: refined, mineral-driven, and built for both early pleasure and graceful evolution in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett shows a pale, shimmering straw color with green highlights, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is precise and cool-toned, with notes of lemon zest, lime cordial and green apple, layered over wet slate, delicate herbal tones and a hint of white flowers. Subtle suggestions of preserved citrus and a gentle, spicy green-pepper lift echo the style seen in prior vintages. On the palate, it is filigreed and finely etched: juicy citrus and stone-fruit flavors glide over a mouthwatering spine of acidity, while the Nahe slate and volcanic soils contribute a distinct saline, almost crystalline minerality. The sweetness is beautifully judged—more about charm and balance than overt richness—making the wine feel both playful and serious at once. With its low alcohol and vibrant structure, this Kabinett has excellent aging potential: expect increasing complexity over 8–15 years, as the fruit deepens, the sweetness integrates further and the mineral notes become even more pronounced.

Production
The Oberhäuser Leistenberg vineyard lies on steep, southeast-facing slopes above the Nahe River, where cool morning sun and well-drained, weathered slate and mixed rocky soils preserve acidity and lend a refined, smoky-mineral character to the Riesling. Dönnhoff farms these parcels with meticulous attention, favoring selective hand-harvesting to pick perfectly ripe but not overripe grapes—essential for the light, filigreed Kabinett style. The fruit is gently pressed, and fermentation proceeds slowly in a combination of stainless steel and traditional large German oak (Stück) or Doppelstück casks, at cool temperatures to capture delicate aromatics. The wine rests on its fine lees to gain texture and harmony before bottling, typically under screwcap to preserve freshness and precision.

Food & Serving
This Kabinett is a versatile food wine, ideal with delicately spiced Asian cuisine (think sushi, sashimi, lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes), fresh goat cheese, ceviche, oysters and other shellfish, as well as light poultry or vegetable dishes with citrus or herbal accents. Its gentle sweetness and vibrant acidity also make it a superb match for mildly spicy dishes or salty, cured meats. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its freshness and precision; as it warms slightly in the glass, the fruit and mineral notes will broaden. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the aromatics to unfurl.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most revered Riesling estates, a family-run winery in the Nahe with roots dating back to the 18th century. Under Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the estate has helped define the modern reputation of the Nahe, demonstrating that this relatively small region can produce wines to rival Germany’s most famous vineyards. Their holdings include some of the Nahe’s top sites—such as Oberhäuser Leistenberg, Hermannshöhle and Brücke—each bottled separately to highlight its unique terroir. Consistently celebrated by international critics and collectors, Dönnhoff has become a benchmark for precision, purity and age-worthy Riesling across the full range of styles, from dry Grosses Gewächs to delicately sweet Kabinett and Spätlese wines.

Dönnhoff is one of the truly great names in Nahe. Oberhauser Leistenberg is a southeast-facing and steep vineyard site that time and again has proven to be an excellent growing site for Kabinett Riesling. Fresh, focused, and with classic freshness.
