Description

Dönnhoff Dellchen GG 2023 is a dry, grand cru–level Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic and revered vineyards, Norheimer Dellchen. Grown on steep porphyry slopes capped with slate, this wine combines intensity, minerality and crystalline precision in a remarkably elegant frame. The 2023 is already beautifully expressive, yet clearly built for a long and graceful evolution in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Dellchen GG 2023 shows a pale, luminous straw color with silvery-green reflections, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is refined and complex rather than showy: delicate lemon zest wrapped around notes of white summer blossoms, wet stone, and a subtle herbal lift reminiscent of chervil. As it opens, more nuances emerge – crushed rock, a whisper of smoke and a cool, stony depth that underlines its great vineyard origin. On the palate, the wine is slim, racy and beautifully poised, led by pure, sunlit citrus – think lemon sorbet and preserved lemon peel – carried on a spine of linear acidity. It feels both airy and penetrating, with a fine, almost shimmering texture and a subtle, saline stoneiness that lingers long after each sip. Bone dry (“knastør”), the 2023 Dellchen GG is vibrant, mouthwatering and cleansing, with a finish that recalls chilled citrus and rain on warm rock. While already thrilling in its youth, it has the structure and acidity to age effortlessly for 15–20 years or more, developing deeper stone fruit, spice and honeyed complexity over time.

Production
Norheimer Dellchen is a steep, amphitheater-like site in the Nahe, carved into weathered volcanic porphyry with a thin skin of slate and gravel – a combination that yields wines of tension, aromatic finesse and distinctive minerality. The vines are rooted deep into this rocky slope, benefiting from excellent drainage, underground water reserves and a warm, sheltered mesoclimate that allows for slow, even ripening. Fruit for the Grosses Gewächs is rigorously hand-harvested in multiple passes, selecting only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes at low yields. In the cellar, Dönnhoff works with a light hand: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and maturation partly in stainless steel and partly in large, traditional German oak Stückfässer. This careful, minimalist vinification preserves the clarity of fruit and the precise, stony character of the Dellchen terroir.

Food & Serving
This precise, bone-dry Riesling is a superb partner for refined, mineral-driven cuisine. Think oysters, scallops, langoustines or simple grilled fish, as well as sushi and sashimi where its acidity and minerality highlight delicate textures. It also works beautifully with fine freshwater dishes like trout or pike-perch, lightly spiced Asian cooking, and young goat’s cheese or fresh cheeses with herbs. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics to unfold. A short decant of 30–60 minutes for young bottles can help the wine open up, especially if served alongside more complex dishes.

Producer
Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most celebrated Riesling estates, a family-run winery whose roots in the Nahe region reach back to the 18th century. Under Helmut Dönnhoff and now his son Cornelius, the domaine has become a benchmark for precision, purity and terroir expression, with a portfolio of Grosses Gewächs wines from some of the finest vineyards in the region, including Dellchen, Hermannshöhle and Brücke. Their meticulous work in steep, rocky sites and their sensitive, low-intervention approach in the cellar have earned them international acclaim, countless top scores and a reputation as one of the leading producers of world-class Riesling.
