Description
Flor de Pingus 2011 is a polished, cellar-released Tempranillo from one of Ribera del Duero’s most coveted names. Sourced from multiple parcels around La Horra and matured in French oak, it combines ripe, powerful fruit with the precision and depth that have made Dominio de Pingus a benchmark producer in Castilla y León.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, almost opaque ruby-red color. The nose is generous and layered, with aromas of ripe cherries, dark berries, sweet spice, cinnamon, clove, and a subtle earthy, forest-floor note.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with plush plum and blackberry fruit framed by silky yet firm tannins. The warm 2011 vintage brings richness and texture, while the acidity keeps everything in balance. The finish is long and spicy, with hints of liquorice, dark fruit, and a gentle oak warmth. It has the structure to develop further with careful cellaring.
Production
Flor de Pingus 2011 is made from Tempranillo grown across several parcels in La Horra, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. The vineyards feature a mix of vine ages and soil types, and the low-yielding vines benefit from the warm, sunny conditions of the vintage, which encouraged full ripeness. Each parcel is fermented separately in stainless steel before the wine is aged for around 18 months in used French oak barrels, allowing the fruit to remain at the forefront while gaining spice and complexity from the wood.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, roast suckling pig, braised beef, game dishes, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C to best show its aromatic depth and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth or after cellar release, to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Dominio de Pingus was founded by Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck and quickly became one of Spain’s most celebrated names, known for producing intensely expressive wines from Ribera del Duero. The estate has earned an outstanding reputation for quality, precision, and tiny production levels, with Pingus itself regarded as a cult wine. Flor de Pingus, the second wine, reflects the same meticulous standards and has become a highly respected reference point for modern Tempranillo.
