Description
Domaine Zind Humbrecht Riesling Grand Cru Brand 2023 is a crystalline expression of Alsatian Riesling from one of the region’s most revered estates. Sourced from the storied Brand Grand Cru, this wine marries precision, depth and luminous freshness in a way that only truly great terroir can. It’s a standout choice for anyone seeking a dry, ageworthy Riesling with real complexity and pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Grand Cru Brand shows a pale lemon colour with bright green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: ripe citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit), white peach and pear are interwoven with floral notes of lime blossom and jasmine, plus a distinct mineral streak—wet stone, flint and a touch of smoke—typical of this warm, rocky site.
On the palate, the wine is dry, taut and finely etched, with a racy acidity that carries generous fruit concentration. Expect juicy stone fruit, citrus oil and a subtle hint of ripe orchard fruits, all wrapped around a powerful, saline mineral core. The mid-palate is both tense and silky, leading into a long, precise finish with lingering citrus, crushed rock and a faint herbal lift. While already attractive in its youth, this Riesling has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining honeyed, waxy and petrol nuances with time in bottle.
Production
The Brand Grand Cru sits on steep, south- to south-east–facing slopes above the town of Turckheim in Alsace, dominated by granite-based soils with sand and degraded rock that offer excellent drainage and heat retention. This warm, sun-drenched terroir produces Rieslings of notable ripeness and intensity, while still preserving acidity thanks to cool nights. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht works these vineyards using organic and biodynamic principles, with meticulous hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are brought to the cellar. Yields are kept low to maximise concentration. In the winery, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, often in large traditional oak casks, at slow, cool temperatures. The wine is then left on fine lees to develop texture and complexity, with minimal intervention, allowing the site and vintage to speak clearly in the finished wine.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Riesling is a superb partner to refined seafood and white meat dishes: think seared scallops, turbot or halibut in a light beurre blanc, grilled prawns, or lobster with herb butter. It also shines with Alsatian classics such as choucroute garnie, and pairs beautifully with Asian cuisine—particularly sushi, sashimi, and delicately spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes—where its acidity and minerality refresh the palate. Serve at 8–10°C to highlight its precision and aromatic lift. In its youth, a light decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, while older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only briefly, if at all, to preserve their delicate tertiary aromas.
Producer
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of Alsace’s benchmark estates, formed in 1959 through the union of two historic winegrowing families, Zind of Turckheim and Humbrecht of Gueberschwihr. Under the stewardship of Olivier Humbrecht MW—one of the world’s most respected voices on terroir—the domaine has become a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Alsace, certified since the late 1990s. With holdings in many of the region’s top vineyards, including prestigious Grands Crus such as Brand, Rangen and Hengst, Zind-Humbrecht is renowned for crafting wines of profound site expression, concentration and balance. The estate’s commitment to low yields, careful handwork in the vines and minimal-intervention winemaking has earned it an international reputation and a loyal following among serious wine enthusiasts and collectors.
