Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2021 37.5CL

Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2021 is a beautifully classic, full-bodied Rhône red from one of Gigondas’ most respected family estates. Made by siblings Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, seventh-generation custodians of the domaine, it showcases old-vine character, southern French spice, and the depth that has made Gigondas a benchmark appellation for powerful Grenache-based blends.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, dark core that hints at its concentration and ripeness. The nose is immediately expressive, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper, liquorice, and a subtle smoky edge that gives it unmistakable Rhône charm. On the palate, it is dense, intense, and layered, with velvety dark fruit at the centre and a supple flow of savoury Mediterranean spice. The structure is firm enough to support ageing, yet the wine already drinks beautifully now. It should continue to evolve positively for at least another decade, gaining further complexity and harmony over time.

Production
The wine is made from estate-grown fruit sourced from Domaine Raspail-Ay’s own vineyards in Gigondas, with a blend led by Grenache and supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. The grapes are harvested by hand, fully destemmed before pressing, and fermented over roughly 30 days. After fermentation, the wine is matured for up to two years in large old foudres, allowing it to develop texture and complexity without overpowering oak influence. It is bottled unfiltered and unrefined to preserve its natural character.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for slow-cooked lamb, grilled beef, game, duck confit, or hearty dishes with Provençal herbs and roasted vegetables. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and if possible, decant it for 1–2 hours to let the aromas open fully and soften the structure.

Today it is run by Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, who continue the domaine’s reputation for producing powerful, traditional wines that reflect the strength and elegance of the southern Rhône. The estate is widely regarded as one of the appellation’s reference producers, particularly for classic, ageworthy Gigondas built on Grenache.
