Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas 2018 Magnum

Domaine Raspail-Ay Gigondas is a classic and deeply characterful Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most respected family estates. Crafted by siblings Christophe and Anne-Sophie Ay, seventh-generation custodians of the domaine, it brings together old-vine Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre in a style that captures both power and finesse. This is the kind of Gigondas that shows why the village has long been regarded as one of the Southern Rhône’s great red-wine strongholds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark, concentrated colour that hints at the wine’s richness and structure. The bouquet is wonderfully Rhône-like: dark cherries, blackberries, blackcurrants, black pepper, liquorice, and a subtle smoky edge. The palate is full-bodied and intense, yet remarkably smooth, with plush dark fruit at the core and layers of warm southern French spice. It has the kind of depth and balance that makes it delicious already, while also offering at least a decade of confident ageing potential.

Production
The wine is made from estate-grown fruit, with the blend led by Grenache at 80%, supported by 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. Grapes are harvested by hand and fully destemmed before pressing. Fermentation lasts around 30 days, followed by up to two years of maturation in large, old foudres — massive oak vats, some holding as much as 13,000 litres. The wine is neither fined nor filtered before bottling, helping preserve its depth and authenticity.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for hearty dishes such as roast lamb, game, grilled beef, lamb shank, or Provençal stews with herbs and garlic. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and while decanting is not essential, an hour or two in a decanter will help open up the wine’s aroma and soften its structure, especially if enjoyed young.
