Description
Domaine Pierre Gelin’s Fixin 1er Cru Napoleon Monopole 2022 is a standout Pinot Noir from one of the most respected names in northern Côte de Nuits. Produced from old vines in a tiny 1er Cru monopole site, it combines rarity, depth, and a distinctly Burgundian sense of place. With only around 700 cases made, this is a wine that feels both exclusive and authentically rooted in Fixin’s long-standing winemaking tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright ruby-red colour, inviting and refined. The nose is layered with dark cherries, olives, truffle, smoke, gingerbread, and earthy nuances, giving it a complex and soulful aromatic profile.
The palate is robust yet finely shaped, with flavours of dark cherry, mocha, liquorice, and warming spice. A velvety texture supports elegant tannins and a subtle streak of acidity that brings freshness and lift, recalling pomegranate seeds. Built with concentration and balance, it has the structure to age gracefully over the coming years, developing even greater savoury complexity.
Production
This 1er Cru monopole comes from Fixin in the northern part of Côte de Nuits, where the vineyard’s terroir and old vines—averaging around 70 years of age—play a central role in the wine’s character. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to ensure only the best fruit is selected.
Vinification follows a respectful, low-intervention approach, with fermentation using natural yeasts and maturation for 21 months in oak barrels, mainly French oak. The modernised cellar, updated in 2011, supports a production philosophy focused on purity, precision, and letting terroir speak clearly in the finished wine.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted game birds, duck breast, mushroom dishes, lamb, and rich braised meats. It also works well with earthy vegetarian plates featuring truffles, lentils, or root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking young to allow the wine’s aromas and textures to fully open.
Producer
Domaine Pierre Gélin was founded in 1925 and is now led by Stéphen Gélin and his son Pierre-Emmanuel, continuing a family tradition built on respect for the land and a pursuit of honest, terroir-driven wines. The domaine is among the leading producers in Fixin and has earned a strong reputation for crafting wines that range from rustic and powerful to refined and elegant, always with integrity and character. Its portfolio spans Bourgogne Rouge through Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, premier cru sites, and even the prestigious Chambertin Clos de Bèze, underlining its stature in the region.
