Description

Domaine Georges Noëllat’s Côte de Nuits-Villages 2023 is a graceful introduction to the finesse and depth that define red Burgundy from the northern Côte d’Or. Crafted from carefully selected parcels, it delivers pure, vibrant Pinot Noir character wrapped in an accessible, youthful frame. This cuvée offers a taste of a highly sought-after domaine at a more approachable price point than its famous Vosne-Romanée and Echezeaux bottlings, making it a smart choice for Burgundy lovers and curious explorers alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Côte de Nuits-Villages shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with youthful purple reflections, signalling energy and freshness. The nose is lifted and precise, with notes of wild raspberry, red cherry, and crushed strawberry layered over hints of violet, rose petal, and subtle forest floor. Delicate touches of spice—white pepper, clove, and a whisper of fine cedar from judicious oak—add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with silken tannins and a finely etched structure that is very Côte de Nuits in character. Juicy red berry fruit is framed by a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything poised and refreshing. Flavours of red plum, pomegranate, and cranberry mingle with savoury undertones of dried herbs and a faint mineral edge on the finish. While already charming and open in its youth, this 2023 should gain further nuance over the next 5–8 years, softening its structure and developing more earthy, truffled complexity with short- to mid-term cellaring.

Production
Sourced from select vineyard sites within the Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation, this wine reflects classic northern Burgundian terroirs of limestone-rich clay and well-draining, stony soils that favour finesse, fragrance, and length over sheer power. Vines are typically tended with meticulous, low-yield viticulture to ensure concentration and healthy, evenly ripened fruit, with harvesting carried out by hand to allow strict sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar door. In the winery, whole berries and a proportion of whole clusters are gently vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity, followed by élevage in French oak barrels—often with a thoughtful use of both new and seasoned wood—to harmonise texture and add subtle spice while keeping the expression firmly focused on fruit and terroir.

Food & Serving
This Côte de Nuits-Villages 2023 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, charcuterie, pork tenderloin, and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle. It also works well with semi-soft cheeses such as Comté, Tomme de Savoie, or mild washed-rind cheeses, and can be a refined match for grilled salmon or tuna. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic lift and silky structure; a light 30–45 minute decant for young bottles can help the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the floral and spice notes to fully emerge.

Producer
Domaine Georges Noëllat is a storied estate based in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of some of Burgundy’s most prized terroirs. Once a small but respected family domaine, it has risen to prominence under the stewardship of Maxime Cheurlin, who took over in his early twenties and quickly gained a reputation for crafting wines of great purity, elegance, and precision. The domaine’s holdings include enviable parcels in top villages and premier crus, and its wines are now sought after by collectors and sommeliers around the world for their refined style and faithful expression of site. As a result, even its appellation-level bottlings, such as this Côte de Nuits-Villages, punch well above their weight and provide a compelling glimpse into the domaine’s philosophy and craftsmanship.
