Domaine Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru 2021 is a beautifully poised Chardonnay that captures the precision, energy, and mineral elegance of one of Puligny’s most admired premier cru sites. Sitting close to the Meursault border, Les Referts has long been valued for producing wines with both finesse and structure, and this vintage shows why the vineyard has such a strong reputation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine offers a bright, focused profile with aromas of Granny Smith apple, lemon, crushed limestone, and white flowers, layered with subtle stone fruit and a whisper of reduction. The nose feels lifted and expressive, with an underlying sense of tension that adds depth and intrigue.
On the palate, it is vibrant and beautifully balanced, with citrus, lime, and fresh apple leading the way before a stony mineral core brings drive and definition. The texture is silky and precise, finishing with a delicate hint of orange zest and a faint spicy nuance. With its cool-fruited character and strong mineral backbone, this wine has excellent aging potential and will continue to gain complexity over time.
Production
Les Referts is planted on deep clay soils with gravelly elements, a terroir that helps give the wine both breadth and a distinctly mineral frame. In 2021, the vineyard’s natural richness and Sauzet’s restrained, careful approach to vinification come together to deliver a wine that balances power, freshness, and clarity.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet premier cru is an excellent match for lobster, scallops, roast chicken with a light cream sauce, fine poultry, or elegant mushroom dishes. Serve it at around 10–12°C, and consider a short decant if opening young to allow the aromas and texture to open up more fully.
Producer
Domaine Etienne Sauzet is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s benchmark producers, with a long-standing reputation for crafting pure, terroir-driven whites of exceptional refinement. The domaine has played an important role in defining the classic style of the village and is widely respected for its consistent quality and ability to produce wines that age gracefully.
