Description
Damilano Barolo Raviole 2019 is a captivating expression of Nebbiolo that combines vertical, finely etched fruit with classic Barolo depth. Sourced from a single hillside vineyard at 300 meters above sea level, it’s a wine that is immediately emotive yet built for contemplation and aging. The Raviole cru, with its alluvial, calcareous and clay-rich soils, has quickly gained attention for producing Barolo of remarkable finesse and aromatic intensity, adding a modern, elegant note to the historic Damilano range.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Barolo Raviole 2019 shows a luminous garnet hue with brick-red reflections at the rim, typical of well-made Nebbiolo. The nose is lifted and precise, offering vibrant notes of red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, intertwined with rose petals, violet, blood orange, and hints of sweet spice, licorice, and subtle underbrush.
On the palate, the wine is vertical and finely structured, with a fresh, almost saline energy driving the red-fruited core. Taut yet refined tannins are beautifully integrated, wrapping around flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, dried roses, and a whisper of tar and tobacco. The alluvial soils translate into striking liveliness and fruit purity, while the limestone and clay bring poise, texture and length. This 2019 vintage has the balance and structure to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, tertiary notes and silkier tannins with time in the cellar.
Production
The Raviole vineyard lies in the hills of Piemonte’s Barolo zone at around 300 meters above sea level, facing southwest to capture the afternoon sun while retaining excellent diurnal temperature swings. Alluvial soils, rich in stones, combine with a significant percentage of limestone and clay, lending both vibrancy and finesse to the Nebbiolo grapes. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional Barolo methods prevail: a controlled fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging in large oak casks (or a mix of large oak and neutral vessels, depending on the final blend) to preserve the purity of fruit and the distinctive character of the Raviole cru. The result is a Barolo that balances structure and elegance, with a clear sense of place.
Food & Serving
Damilano Barolo Raviole 2019 is a natural match for refined, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), veal shank, roasted lamb, or game birds like guinea fowl and pheasant. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based dishes, mushroom risotto, tajarin pasta with rich ragù, and aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Taleggio. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles will require a more delicate, shorter decant primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.
Producer
Damilano is one of Barolo’s historic family estates, with roots tracing back to the late 19th century when Giuseppe Borgogno first began cultivating vineyards in the heart of Piemonte. Over generations, the Damilano family has expanded and refined their holdings, becoming known for a portfolio that highlights some of the region’s most prestigious crus. Today, Damilano is recognized as a key ambassador for Barolo, combining respect for tradition with meticulous vineyard management and thoughtful, terroir-driven winemaking. Their single-vineyard bottlings, including Raviole, underscore the house’s commitment to expressing the nuances of site, and they have earned consistent acclaim from international critics for their balance, longevity, and elegance.
