Description

D'Addario Susumaniello Accanto 2023 showcases one of Southern Italy’s most intriguing native grapes in a modern, polished style. This red wine from Apulia highlights Susumaniello’s natural intensity while remaining remarkably fresh and approachable. Once nearly forgotten, Susumaniello has been lovingly revived by dedicated producers like D’Addario, making this bottling a compelling taste of Puglia’s new wave.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Accanto 2023 typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with purple highlights, reflecting its youthful energy and concentration. The nose opens with ripe black cherry, plum and wild berries, followed by notes of violets, Mediterranean herbs, subtle spice and a touch of graphite or cocoa, depending on the exact élevage. On the palate, expect a full-bodied yet lively red with juicy dark fruit, hints of blackberry and morello cherry, and a savoury backbone that keeps everything in balance. The tannins are firm but polished, giving structure without harshness, while a bright, natural acidity – a hallmark of Susumaniello – adds lift and drinkability. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of spice and dark fruit. Enjoyed in its youth for its vibrancy, this vintage should also develop nicely over the next 3–5 years, gaining complexity and softer edges with short to medium-term cellaring.

Production
Sourced from vineyards in Apulia, D’Addario’s Susumaniello benefits from the region’s warm Mediterranean climate, cooling breezes from the Adriatic, and predominantly calcareous, clay-limestone soils that help retain freshness while concentrating flavour. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve the delicate balance between fruit richness and acidity. In the cellar, the must is fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to protect aromatics and varietal character, with a careful maceration on the skins to extract colour, tannin and flavour without over-extraction. The wine may then see a period of maturation in stainless steel and/or neutral or lightly toasted oak, allowing Susumaniello’s pure fruit and regional identity to remain front and centre.

Food & Serving
D'Addario Susumaniello Accanto 2023 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with rich pasta dishes such as orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe, tomato-based ragù, grilled lamb, pork chops, and hearty pizzas with cured meats. It also complements aged cheeses, roasted vegetables, and Mediterranean-inspired dishes featuring herbs, olives and tomatoes. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both its fruit and freshness. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the aromatics open up and soften the tannins, especially in its first few years of life.

Producer
The D’Addario family winery is part of a new generation of Apulian producers championing indigenous grape varieties and terroir-driven wines. Based in southern Italy’s Puglia region, they focus on crafting authentic expressions of local grapes like Susumaniello, Negroamaro and Primitivo, bridging traditional know-how with contemporary winemaking techniques. By rehabilitating once-overlooked varieties and elevating quality standards, D’Addario has contributed to the growing recognition of Apulia as a source of characterful, premium wines that stand proudly alongside Italy’s more famous regions.
