Description
Costa Arente Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena 2019 is a richly structured red that captures the depth and drama of one of Italy’s most iconic wine styles. Crafted from meticulously dried Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes, it offers the opulence and intensity that place Amarone firmly among Italy’s ‘Great Reds’. Born in the Valpantena valley near Verona, this wine showcases both the power of the terroir and the precision of a producer obsessed with every detail of the process.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Costa Arente Amarone 2019 shows a deep, garnet-ruby core with subtle brick hues toward the rim, hinting at both concentration and early evolution. The nose is generous and inviting, with layers of ripe black cherry, dried plum and blackberry compote lifted by notes of fig, sweet spice, cocoa, licorice and a touch of dried rose and tobacco.
On the palate, the wine is full‑bodied and velvety, with a rich, enveloping texture balanced by a firm backbone of tannin and a fresh, food‑friendly acidity. Flavors of dark cherry liqueur, dried cranberry and dates intertwine with notes of dark chocolate, espresso, baking spices and a hint of balsamic and forest floor on the long, warming finish. The 2019 vintage is already harmonious, but its structure and depth suggest excellent aging potential of 10–15 years or more in a proper cellar, during which it will gain further complexity and tertiary notes.
Production
Costa Arente sources this Amarone from hillside vineyards in the Valpantena, a cool, ventilated sub‑valley of Valpolicella known for its limestone and marl soils and wide day‑night temperature shifts. These conditions help preserve aromatics and acidity in the native Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes. Grapes are hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully selected and laid out to dry (appassimento) for several months, concentrating sugars, flavors and phenolic compounds. After gentle pressing, fermentation proceeds slowly at controlled temperatures to manage the high potential alcohol and preserve aromatic nuance. The wine is then matured in wood—typically a mix of larger casks and smaller barrels—to refine the tannins, build complexity and integrate the powerful fruit with subtle notes of spice and toast before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Amarone is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef cheeks, slow‑cooked lamb shanks, wild boar ragù, game birds, aged hard cheeses or a truffle‑infused risotto. It also pairs beautifully with dark chocolate or as a contemplative ‘vino da meditazione’ on its own. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 18–20°C (64–68°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is strongly recommended to allow the wine to open up fully and reveal its layers of fruit, spice and tertiary complexity.
Producer
Costa Arente is an estate dedicated to expressing the character of Valpantena, one of Valpolicella’s most prized and increasingly recognized sub‑regions near Verona. While Amarone has long been a symbol of Veneto’s winemaking heritage, Costa Arente approaches it as a true “process wine,” where meticulous attention to every step—from vineyard management and hand selection to appassimento and élevage—is essential to quality. The winery’s focus on precision, low yields and careful grape drying positions it among the modern ambassadors of Amarone, contributing to the region’s reputation for premium, terroir‑driven wines and aiming to stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the finest Amarone producers in Italy.
