Description
Contadi Castaldi Franciacorta Rosé is a refined Italian sparkling wine that captures the elegance and energy of Lombardy’s premier sparkling region. Crafted primarily from Pinot Nero with Chardonnay for finesse, it offers a sophisticated alternative to Champagne with a distinctly Italian flair. As part of the renowned Franciacorta appellation, this rosé showcases meticulous traditional-method winemaking and the unique character of the region’s hillside vineyards.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Franciacorta Rosé shows a delicate, shimmering salmon-pink hue with fine, persistent bubbles that form a graceful, creamy mousse. The nose is inviting and layered, with notes of wild strawberry, pomegranate, and redcurrant intertwined with hints of rose petals, citrus zest, and a subtle touch of brioche and almond from aging on the lees.
On the palate, it is dry, vibrant, and beautifully balanced. Fresh red berry flavors—raspberry and cranberry—are lifted by lively acidity and framed by a gentle, chalky minerality that speaks of its Lombard terroir. Chardonnay contributes finesse, tension, and a refined, citrusy backbone, while Pinot Nero adds structure and depth. The finish is long and clean, with lingering notes of pink grapefruit and a whisper of pastry. Enjoy it now for its freshness and precision; with proper cellaring over the next 3–5 years, it can develop additional complexity and softer, more integrated autolytic notes.
Production
The grapes for Contadi Castaldi Franciacorta Rosé come from carefully selected vineyard parcels across the rolling hills of Franciacorta in Lombardy, where glacial morainic soils rich in stones and minerals provide excellent drainage and impart tension and finesse to the wines. Vines are typically managed with low yields and hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic purity. After gentle pressing, the base wines are vinified separately—Pinot Nero bringing structure and red-fruit character, Chardonnay contributing elegance and freshness—before being blended with precision. The secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle, following the traditional method, with an extended period of aging on the lees to develop fine bubbles, texture, and subtle toasty complexity. A carefully judged dosage preserves the wine’s dry, crisp profile and highlights the natural fruit and minerality.
Food & Serving
This Franciacorta Rosé is an exceptionally versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with charcuterie, salmon tartare, tuna carpaccio, shrimp, sushi, and lightly spiced Asian dishes. It also complements soft cheeses, tomato-based starters, grilled vegetables, and poultry dishes such as roast chicken or turkey. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 6–8°C (43–46°F), to emphasize its freshness and delicate fruit. A brief, gentle aeration in the glass is usually sufficient; decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle a few minutes before serving allows the aromas to unfold fully.
