Description
Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères 2020 is a highly sought-after white Burgundy from one of the most revered domaines in the region. Sourced from the Les Enseignères lieu-dit, which sits just below some of Puligny’s finest premier crus, this cuvée delivers a level of tension, depth and refinement that rivals many top-tier wines. In true Coche-Dury style, it combines precision and power with an almost electric freshness, making it a benchmark expression of Puligny Chardonnay in a standout vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Les Enseignères shows a pale to medium lemon-gold hue with a brilliant, almost crystalline brightness. The nose is finely etched and layered: citrus oil, lemon zest and green apple mingle with white flowers, chalky minerality and a delicately smoky, grilled hazelnut character that is so closely associated with Coche-Dury. Subtle notes of ripe pear, pastry cream and a hint of flint emerge with air, adding complexity without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, this wine is focused and energetic, with a taut, linear structure that carries impressive concentration. Lively acidity frames flavors of Meyer lemon, crunchy orchard fruit, and ripe stone fruit, supported by a saline, stony core and discreet but beautifully integrated oak spice. The texture is both silky and tightly coiled, suggesting a long life ahead. While already alluring in its youth, the 2020 has clear aging potential: over 8–15 years, it should gain further depth, nutty nuances and a broader, more layered mid-palate while retaining its hallmark precision.
Production
Les Enseignères is a prized village-level parcel in Puligny-Montrachet, located on well-drained limestone and clay soils at the foot of the slope beneath some of the appellation’s top premier crus. This terroir is known for producing wines of finesse, mineral tension and aromatic purity. Coche-Dury works with very low yields, meticulous vineyard husbandry and careful hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe Chardonnay grapes reach the winery. Vinification typically involves gentle pressing, fermentation in oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak), and extended maturation on fine lees, with careful bâtonnage and élevage aimed at building texture and complexity while preserving clarity and freshness. The result is a wine that is both deeply expressive of Puligny and unmistakably Coche-Dury in character.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet is a superb match for refined dishes that echo its elegance and subtle richness. Think turbot or sole with beurre blanc, buttery poached lobster, seared scallops, or roast chicken with morel mushrooms and a light cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with high-quality, simply prepared shellfish and delicately flavored cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 11–13°C (52–55°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold. If opened in its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and harmonize, while older bottles are best served directly from the bottle with minimal aeration.
Producer
Domaine Coche-Dury is one of Burgundy’s most iconic and collectible producers, famed worldwide for its rigorous standards and distinctive, intensely expressive white wines. Based in Meursault, the family-run estate has, over several generations, built a reputation for crafting some of the finest examples of Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune. Coche-Dury’s meticulous work in the vineyard, obsessive attention to detail in the cellar, and instantly recognizable style—marked by purity, tension and a subtle smoky complexity—have made their wines a reference point for white Burgundy. Their limited holdings in top villages like Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, combined with tiny production and consistently outstanding quality, ensure that bottles such as Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères are both highly prized and a true reflection of Burgundy at its most refined.
