Domaine Coche-Dury is one of the most sought-after names in white Burgundy, a small family estate in Meursault whose bottles are allocated long before they reach a shelf. The wines favour precision over power: taut, mineral Chardonnay that starts tightly wound and unfolds over a decade or more in the cellar.
A Meursault family estate and its vineyards
The domaine traces back to Léon Coche in the 1920s and took its current name when Jean-François Coche married Odile Dury and took charge in the 1970s. His son Raphaël has run things since around 2010, keeping the same meticulous, low-yield approach. Its nine hectares are spread across small parcels in Meursault and neighbouring villages, farmed by hand and vinified plot by plot. At the top sits a sliver of Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, one of the most coveted white wines in Burgundy.
The wines: mineral Chardonnay and a few reds
Coche-Dury is celebrated above all for Chardonnay, and its Meursault is a benchmark for the appellation. The Premier Cru Perrières is the star, dense and stony, while the village Caillerets and other lieux-dits often outshine grander names elsewhere. Expect citrus peel, white flowers, hazelnut and crushed stone, with a faint struck-match reduction that is part of the house signature. There are also small quantities of Pinot Noir from Volnay, Auxey-Duresses and Monthelie, plus honest Bourgogne blanc and rouge. These rank among the most serious white wines you can buy.
Domaine Coche-Dury FAQ
Why is Coche-Dury so expensive and hard to find?
Production is tiny, around 3,500 cases a year split across many small cuvées, and collector demand is intense. Bottles sell on strict allocation, so open-market prices sit among the highest in white Burgundy.
Should I drink it young or cellar it?
Give it time. The village and Premier Cru whites reward five to ten years, and the Corton-Charlemagne considerably longer.
What food suits these wines?
The whites shine with lobster, roast chicken, veal and creamy sauces, and with age they love poultry with morels. The reds suit duck, game birds and mushroom dishes.
