Description
Cloudy Bay Te Koko is a distinctive Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that shows a more layered, textural side of this celebrated grape. Crafted with a careful selection of the best parcels, it stands out for its balance of freshness, complexity, and subtle oak influence, continuing Cloudy Bay’s legacy of defining New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the world stage.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, Te Koko opens with an elegant, restrained nose of citrus, lime leaf, apricot, and orange blossom. With air, more nuanced aromas emerge, adding notes of passionfruit, white stone fruit, makrut lime, pink peppercorn, hibiscus, and pink grapefruit.
The palate is bright and complex, combining juicy citrus and white stone fruit with a saline edge and mouthwatering lemony acidity. The texture is more rounded and layered than a classic stainless-steel Sauvignon Blanc, and the finish is long, precise, and lively. While already expressive, it has the structure to develop additional complexity with short- to medium-term cellaring.
Production
Te Koko is sourced mainly from Cloudy Bay’s Wairau Valley vineyards, where sunny days, cool nights, and well-drained gravel soils create ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc. Key parcels include Estate, Motukawa, Widow’s Block, Red Shed, and Mustang. The 2023 season began cool and unsettled, with sharp frost during flowering and a lower-than-average crop, followed by an exceptionally dry summer that led to one of Marlborough’s driest periods on record.
Fruit was carefully monitored vineyard by vineyard to determine the optimal picking date and ensure full flavour development. After harvest, the juice was cold-settled, racked, and fermented with selected yeasts; most of the wine fermented in stainless steel, while a small portion was fermented in large oak vessels at warmer temperatures. Some ferments were carried out with wild yeast to add texture and depth, and only the finest lots were chosen for the final blend.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 8–10°C. Te Koko pairs beautifully with seafood such as lobster, scallops, oysters, and grilled fish, as well as dishes with citrus, herbs, or a touch of spice. It also works well with roasted chicken, goat’s cheese, or asparagus-based dishes. Decanting is not necessary, but giving it a little time in the glass will help раскрыve its aromatic complexity.
