Description
Clos Mogador 2006 is one of Priorat’s most iconic wines, combining old-vine intensity with the polish and character that helped put this rugged region on the map. Crafted by pioneer René Barbier and his family, it reflects both the extreme landscape of Priorat and the modern renaissance of Spanish fine wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is typically deep and concentrated, with a dark garnet core and a lifted, youthful edge despite its age. The nose is expressive and layered, offering ripe dark berries, plum, Mediterranean herbs, graphite, and a subtle earthy, mineral undertone, with hints of spice and balsamic complexity.
On the palate, Clos Mogador 2006 is powerful yet balanced, with dense fruit, firm structure, and the stony, saline energy that defines top Priorat. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah/Shiraz bring depth, freshness, and breadth, while the wine’s ageing potential is excellent; in a strong vintage and with proper cellaring, it can continue to evolve beautifully for many years.
Production
Sourced from dry-farmed vineyards in Priorat, where extreme heat, low rainfall, and poor soils naturally limit yields, the grapes come from vines that must work hard to survive. This stress contributes to the concentration and intensity for which the region is known. Vinification follows a philosophy of minimal intervention and careful selection, allowing the character of the fruit and terroir to come through with clarity and power.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavoured dishes such as grilled lamb, beef short ribs, venison, roasted suckling pig, or slow-cooked Mediterranean stews with rosemary and herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours, especially if opening now, to allow the wine to fully раскры its complexity and soften its structure.
Producer
Clos Mogador is a family estate led by René Barbier, one of the key pioneers behind Priorat’s transformation from obscure region to world-class wine destination. Trained in Burgundy and Bordeaux and with experience at estates such as Petrus, Barbier brought both ambition and respect for terroir to Priorat in the late 1970s. Today, Clos Mogador remains one of the region’s benchmark producers and is widely regarded as a cult winery with significant historical importance in Spanish wine.
