Description
Claudio Mariotto’s Pitasso is a refined expression of Timorasso from Derthona, one of the most distinctive white-wine territories in Piedmont. Produced from mature vines in the Colli Tortonesi, it combines silken texture and vibrant freshness with remarkable mineral depth. The estate has played an important role in the modern revival of Timorasso, a historic local grape prized for its character and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
Bright and elegant in the glass, the 2023 Pitasso opens with expressive floral and fruit aromas, including chamomile, rose, lemon verbena and citrus. On the palate, it is enveloping and supple, with ripe plum, liquorice and citrus flavours balanced by lively acidity and a pronounced mineral character.
The finish is long and finely detailed, revealing notes of walnut, toasted almond and flint. Fine lees ageing lends the wine a glyceric, silky texture without compromising its freshness. Although enjoyable in its youth, this is a Timorasso with excellent ageing potential and should develop greater complexity over the coming years.
Production
The grapes come from vineyards in Vho and Sarezzano, within the Derthona subzone of Colli Tortonesi, at approximately 250–300 metres above sea level. South-eastern exposure, the influence of the nearby Apennines and the Ligurian Sea, and calcareous clay soils create ideal conditions for producing concentrated yet fresh Timorasso. The vines are trained using the Guyot system, and the grapes are harvested by hand between late September and early October. After gentle pressing, the must ferments at a controlled temperature to preserve aromatic precision. The wine then matures on fine lees for at least ten months, gaining depth, texture and length.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its combination of freshness, texture and minerality makes it a versatile partner for seafood, shellfish, grilled fish, risotto, pasta with creamy or herb-based sauces, and poultry. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or white truffle. Decanting is not essential, but allowing the wine to breathe briefly in the glass—or giving it a short decant—can help reveal its floral, nutty and mineral nuances.
Producer
Founded in 1920, Claudio Mariotto is one of the leading estates associated with the revival of Timorasso in Colli Tortonesi. The winery farms mature vines, including parcels more than forty years old in Vho and Sarezzano, with a strong focus on expressing the character of the Derthona terroir. Through careful vineyard work and extended lees ageing, the estate produces wines known for their aromatic intensity, mineral precision and ability to evolve gracefully in bottle.
