Description
Clarendon Hills Piggott Range Vineyard Syrah 2004 is an iconic single-vineyard wine from McLaren Vale, showcasing the remarkable concentration and longevity for which the estate is renowned. From the elevated Piggott Range Vineyard in Clarendon, it combines the power of Australian Shiraz with unusual mineral precision and an elegant, almost European sense of structure.
Tasting Notes
Deep and opaque in colour, with a nearly black core. The mature bouquet is intensely layered, revealing blackberry, boysenberry and dark plum alongside crushed stone, espresso, dark chocolate, liquorice and exotic spices. With further air, more developed notes of leather, tobacco, smoke and forest floor emerge.
The palate is powerful and concentrated yet remarkably poised, balancing dense dark fruit with coffee, pepper, savoury spice and mineral nuances. Silky tannins and bright freshness provide definition, while the exceptionally long finish continues to reveal new layers. The 2004 vintage is now at a compelling stage of maturity, though a well-cellared bottle should continue to develop gracefully for several more years.
Production
The wine comes from the high-elevation Piggott Range Vineyard in Clarendon, where sparse, stony soils naturally limit yields and help produce fruit of exceptional intensity and mineral character. The Syrah is crafted as a serious single-vineyard expression, preserving the character of the site through concentrated fruit, careful vinification and extended maturation. The result is a wine with both the richness associated with McLaren Vale and the structure required for long-term ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C with roast or braised beef, venison and other game, slow-cooked lamb, richly flavoured mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly if the bottle has been stored well, while also allowing time to taste it periodically as it opens in the glass.
Producer
Founded by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990, Clarendon Hills has become one of Australia’s most respected producers of premium, single-vineyard Shiraz. The estate’s focus on distinct sites in and around McLaren Vale helped establish its reputation among collectors, with wines celebrated for their power, individuality and exceptional ageing potential. Piggott Range is one of the winery’s most recognised vineyard expressions, reflecting the distinctive highland terroir of Clarendon.
