Description

Christmann & Kauffmann Cuvée No. 204 is a finely textured Brut Nature sparkling wine made from 2021 fruit grown in Germany’s Pfalz. A blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, it spent 31 months ageing in bottle before disgorgement and earned 93 points from Robert Parker.

Tasting Notes
Pale gold in the glass, it opens with ripe quince, apple and subtle spice, with delicate notes of brioche and apple peel. On the palate, herbal spice and bright citrus meet a fine, seamlessly integrated mousse; a saline, mineral finish brings freshness and carries through to a long, balanced close. Its precision and freshness make it appealing now, though no specific cellaring window is given.

Production
The grapes were harvested in September 2021 from top sites in Gimmeldingen, Königsbach and Mußbach, where limestone and sandstone soils contribute to the wine’s mineral character. The blend comprises 50% spontaneously fermented Pinot Noir and 25% each Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. It was aged in oak, bottled in May 2022 and disgorged in November 2024 after 31 months in bottle.

Food & Serving
Try it with sardines in olive oil, as suggested by Robert Parker reviewer Stephan Reinhardt, or with other simply prepared seafood. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, in a larger wine glass to allow its layered aromas to unfold. Decanting is not necessary; give the wine a little time in the glass instead.
