Description
Chiappini Ferruggini 2023 is an organic Bolgheri Rosso that captures the sunny, maritime character of Tuscany’s celebrated coastal appellation. A distinctive blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, it combines vibrant red-fruit freshness with a supple texture, elegant structure and the refined influence of French oak. The Chiappini family has been connected with Bolgheri since the 1950s, making this a wine with a strong sense of place and heritage.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in the glass, Ferruggini opens with expressive aromas of cherry, cranberry and redcurrant, complemented by hints of black tea, orange peel and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and energetic, with soft tannins and a smooth, graceful texture. Its linear structure keeps the wine lively and balanced, while the clear, ripe fruit remains at the centre of the profile.
Approachable in its youth, the 2023 vintage can be enjoyed now for its freshness and easy drinkability, but it should develop additional complexity over the next three to five years when properly stored.
Production
The grapes come from Chiappini’s vineyards in Bolgheri, where medium-textured alluvial soils combine sand, silt, clay and calcareous elements with mineral-rich gravelly conglomerates. These well-drained soils help produce wines with clear fruit expression and elegant structure. The vineyards are farmed organically, using green manure, organic fertilisation and carefully managed applications of copper and sulphur. Harvest takes place in the first half of September, followed by fermentation with naturally occurring yeasts in stainless-steel tanks. The wine matures for twelve months, primarily in steel with the remainder in French oak, preserving its freshness while adding subtle depth and polish.
Food & Serving
A versatile partner for Tuscan-inspired cooking, Ferruggini works particularly well with grilled sausages, roasted pork, herb-roasted poultry, wild boar ragù, tomato-based pasta and hearty vegetable dishes. Serve slightly cool, at around 16–18°C, to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not essential, though a short 20–30 minute airing can help the wine open up, especially when served in its youth.
Producer
Founded in 1978, the Chiappini estate is rooted in a family farming tradition that has been present in Bolgheri since the 1950s. The estate cultivates 15 hectares of vineyards and has followed strict organic principles since 2010, with the aim of preserving the authenticity and vitality of the Tuscan coastal terroir. Working under the guidance of oenologist Emiliano Falsini, Chiappini produces wines known for their precision, elegance and regional character. The estate’s quality has been recognised by publications and guides including Bibenda, Decanter and Gambero Rosso.
