Description

Château Suduiraut is one of Sauternes’ great names, a Premier Cru estate in Preignac just north of the legendary Château d’Yquem. Dating back to the 16th century, it combines historic prestige with some of the most elegant sweet wines in Bordeaux, often admired as much for the beauty of the estate as for the finesse in the glass.

Tasting Notes
Typically deep golden in colour, the 2010 vintage shows the richness and concentration expected from a top Sauternes, with a luminous, honeyed sheen. On the nose, expect layered aromas of apricot, candied citrus, acacia blossom, and fine botrytis-driven notes, framed by a refined mineral freshness. The palate is lush yet precise, with ripe stone fruit, orange peel, saffron, and honey balanced by bright acidity that keeps the wine lifted rather than heavy. It has excellent aging potential and can evolve beautifully for decades, developing deeper amber tones and more complex notes of caramel, dried fruit, and spice.

Production
Château Suduiraut sits on an expansive 200-hectare estate in Preignac, of which 92 hectares are planted to vine, mainly Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyard’s gravelly, well-drained terroir is ideal for the development of noble rot, which is essential to Sauternes production. Harvesting is carried out selectively, typically in several passes to pick only the perfectly botrytized grapes, followed by careful vinification designed to preserve purity, concentration, and the estate’s signature elegance.

Food & Serving
Serve chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to balance the wine’s sweetness with freshness. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese, fruit tarts, tarte Tatin, crème brûlée, and other desserts featuring stone fruit, citrus, or caramel notes. Decanting is generally not necessary, though an older bottle may benefit from a short period in the glass to open up.

Producer
Château Suduiraut is one of the most respected producers in Sauternes and has been a benchmark estate since the 16th century. Its gardens were designed by the architect behind Versailles, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most beautiful properties in Bordeaux. Over the years, the château has built a strong reputation not only for its grand vin, but also for its well-regarded second wines and dry whites, confirming its importance as a modern, multi-faceted estate in the region.
