Description

Classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, Château Rieussec is one of Sauternes’ historic names. The 2007 vintage combines botrytis-rich sweetness with a notably fresh line of acidity, bringing balance to its honeyed, spice-laced character.

Tasting Notes
Robert Parker describes an almost Barsac-like bouquet, with barley sugar, ginger and honey. On the palate, concentrated botrytis fruit is lifted by bright acidity, while a spicy note marks the finish. The wine was tasting somewhat reserved in Parker’s April 2016 assessment, so it may benefit from time in the glass.

Production
The 2007 blend is 87% Sémillon, 8.5% Sauvignon Blanc and 4.5% Muscadelle. Harvest took place in successive selections from 13 September to 31 October, allowing pickers to choose grapes affected by botrytis, the beneficial fungus that concentrates their sugars and flavours. Château Rieussec wines are matured in barriques; the estate’s stated practice is to use a combination of new and previously used oak.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C. Pair it with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit-based desserts or dishes featuring apricot and peach; it can also be enjoyed on its own. A young or recently opened bottle may benefit from a short time in the glass rather than prolonged decanting.

Producer
Château Rieussec sits in Sauternes, southwest of Château d’Yquem, and was named a Premier Cru Classé in 1855. The estate later became part of the Lafite Rothschild group. Its reputation rests on sweet Bordeaux wines made from botrytised grapes, with Sémillon at the heart of the blend.
