Château Mouton Rothschild 2016 is a powerful, finely balanced Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. A classified First Growth since 1973, Mouton is renowned for wines that combine concentration and structure with a distinctive sense of place—and this vintage is built for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
Deep in colour, the wine opens with layers of cassis and other dark fruit, alongside graphite, cedar, tobacco and warming spice. On the palate, it is concentrated and commanding, yet precise, with firm, polished tannins and a long, complex finish. Its structure and balance suggest excellent ageing potential over several decades when stored well.
Production
The Pauillac vineyards are rooted in the gravel-rich soils characteristic of the appellation, which favour Cabernet Sauvignon and contribute to the wine’s structure and mineral edge. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation. The wine is matured in French oak barrels, a traditional approach that integrates oak complexity with the fruit and tannins.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for about two hours before serving, particularly while the wine is young, to let its aromas unfold. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef, venison and other richly flavoured dishes; mature hard cheeses also make a fitting match.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is a landmark Pauillac estate and one of Bordeaux’s five original First Growths under the 1855 Classification. It was elevated from Second Growth to First Growth in 1973—the only estate to receive such a change—and is also known for its distinctive commissioned artist labels, introduced with the 1945 vintage.
