Description
Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé 2018 is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown on some of the Médoc’s finest gravel. This is a powerful, deeply structured red that captures the generosity of the 2018 vintage while staying true to Montrose’s famously classical style. Classified as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 classification, it remains one of Saint-Estèphe’s most revered and ageworthy wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Montrose is opaque, inky ruby with a vibrant purple rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered: blackcurrant, blackberry and plum are laced with graphite, cedar, cigar box, crushed violets and a touch of pencil shavings, alongside subtle hints of cocoa and spice from fine French oak.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and impeccably structured, with ripe yet firm tannins and a core of dark, pure black fruit. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and damson are underpinned by savory notes of tobacco, graphite, licorice and a saline, mineral edge that speaks clearly of Saint-Estèphe. The finish is long, precise and vibrant, carried by fresh acidity and finely integrated oak. Still youthful and tightly knit, this 2018 has excellent aging potential; it will reward 10–15 years of cellaring and can easily evolve gracefully for 25–30 years or more in optimal conditions.
Production
The vineyards of Château Montrose lie on a prized gravelly ridge overlooking the Gironde estuary in Saint-Estèphe, with deep layers of gravel and sand over clay that provide superb drainage and contribute to the wine’s power, minerality and longevity. The estate practices meticulous vineyard management and manual harvesting, with a rigorous selection of bunches in the vineyard and further sorting at the winery to ensure only the finest grapes are used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats parcel by parcel, allowing each plot to express its character, followed by a long, gentle maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The Grand Vin is then aged in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, for around 18 months, with careful rackings and blending to refine texture and build the wine’s seamless, layered profile.
Food & Serving
This is a classic partner for rich, savory dishes: roast or grilled lamb, ribeye steak, beef Wellington, venison and other game, or slow-braised short ribs all highlight its depth and structure. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragout, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature farmhouse cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C to allow the aromatics to fully open. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s complexity; as it matures, a shorter decant of around 1 hour is usually sufficient to awaken the bouquet and remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Montrose was established in the early 19th century and swiftly rose to prominence, earning its status as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification—an honor it still upholds with remarkable consistency. Situated in Saint-Estèphe on the Médoc’s famed Left Bank, Montrose has long been regarded as one of the appellation’s reference estates, producing wines noted for their power, structure and longevity. Under the stewardship of the Bouygues family in recent decades, the château has invested heavily in both vineyard and cellar, embracing precision viticulture and modern winemaking while preserving a deeply classical, terroir-driven style. Its Grand Vin is regularly counted among the finest wines of Bordeaux, with numerous high scores and accolades across vintages, and is a must-have for collectors of ageworthy, traditional claret.
