Description
Château Montrose 2017 is a precise, classical Saint-Estèphe with the estate’s hallmark structure, depth and remarkable longevity. Praised for its purity and poise, this vintage combines concentrated dark fruit with a cooler, more refined character and should reward both medium-term cellaring and extended bottle age.
Tasting Notes
Deeply coloured in the glass, the wine opens with an intense and refined bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant, juniper and violet, with an elegant floral character that recalls the perfume of Margaux. A discreet layer of new oak remains evident following bottling, but it is well integrated with the fruit.
The palate is medium-bodied, focused and tightly coiled, with a gentle grip on entry and finely judged tannins. Cool, reserved and precise, it builds toward a persistent finish marked by impressive energy and balance. While approachable after around five or six years in bottle, Château Montrose 2017 should develop beautifully for 25 to 30 years or more under excellent storage conditions.
Production
Produced in Saint-Estèphe on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Montrose benefits from gravelly soils over clay, which provide excellent drainage while helping retain water during warmer periods. The estate’s grapes are carefully selected and traditionally harvested by hand before fermentation and maturation in oak, allowing the wine to develop its characteristic combination of dark-fruit intensity, structure and mineral freshness. The 2017 vintage is especially notable for its purity, precision and harmonious integration of oak.
Food & Serving
Its firm structure and savoury depth make Château Montrose 2017 an excellent partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, grilled entrecôte and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. For drinking now, decant for around one to two hours, although older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only shortly before serving if necessary.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the most distinguished estates of Saint-Estèphe and a Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. Located on a dramatic hillside overlooking the Gironde estuary, the château is renowned for powerful, age-worthy wines built around Cabernet Sauvignon, while retaining the freshness and savoury character associated with its northern Médoc setting. Its consistent quality and ability to mature gracefully have made Montrose one of Bordeaux’s most respected Left Bank estates.
