Description

Château Montrose 2009 in magnum format is one of Saint-Estèphe’s great benchmarks: a powerful, highly structured first wine from a historic Second Growth estate, crafted with meticulous selection at every stage. This is a rare and highly sought-after vintage, and 2009 is widely regarded as one of the estate’s legendary years, celebrated for its depth, balance, and long life ahead.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the deep colour you would expect from a grand Bordeaux built on Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dark, concentrated core. The bouquet is layered and refined, unfolding notes of blackberries, dark plum, cigar box, loamy earth, and polished new oak, with a subtle floral lift and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and expansive, yet beautifully controlled, with velvety tannins, remarkable density, and a fresh underlying energy that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, resonant, and complex. While it is already impressive, this is a wine with outstanding ageing potential and will continue to evolve gracefully for decades, especially in magnum.

Production
Château Montrose sits on a remarkable 95-hectare vineyard in Saint-Estèphe, laid out in a single continuous block around the château and its buildings—a rare and historic configuration that has remained largely unchanged since the 1855 classification. The terroir is perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, with warm gravelly soils over clay subsoils that help retain water during dry periods, while the blend is completed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The grand vin is the result of strict selection, and the 2009 spent 18 months maturing in French oak barrels, 60% of which were new.

Food & Serving
This is a wine to serve with richly flavoured dishes such as ribeye steak, roast lamb, game, beef Wellington, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if enjoying it now, especially because the magnum format and the wine’s structure both benefit from extended aeration.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Bordeaux and a benchmark estate in Saint-Estèphe, standing alongside Cos d’Estournel at the very top of the appellation. Founded in the late 18th century after being separated from Château Calon-Ségur, it was classified as a Second Growth in 1855 and has since earned a formidable reputation for producing powerful, age-worthy wines that are admired by critics and collectors worldwide. The estate’s most celebrated vintages include 1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009.
