Description
Château Montrose 2009 is the first wine of this historic Saint-Estèphe estate, selected through the strictest standards at every stage of production. A legendary vintage from one of Bordeaux’s most revered Classified Growths, it combines power, finesse, and remarkable longevity in a wine that captures the grandeur of Montrose at its peak.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is deep and intense, with the dark concentration expected from a great left-bank Bordeaux. The nose is layered and complex, offering blackberry, blackcurrant, mulberry, forest floor, damp earth, crushed stone, and subtle floral nuances, all lifted by elegant oak notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and monumental, yet finely balanced, with abundant sweet tannins, superb structure, and a long, mineral-driven finish. This is a wine built for the long haul and will continue to evolve beautifully for decades.
Production
Château Montrose sits on a rare and historic 95-hectare single block in Saint-Estèphe, with gravelly, well-drained soils over clay that are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and the estate’s best parcels are rigorously selected for the Grand Vin. The 2009 was aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, contributing structure and refinement without overshadowing the wine’s natural depth and purity.
Food & Serving
Best served at around 16–18°C, Château Montrose 2009 deserves a little patience before serving and will often benefit from decanting for several hours if opened young. It pairs beautifully with rich dishes such as roast lamb, beef ribeye, venison, duck breast, truffle-infused dishes, and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and, alongside Cos d’Estournel, sits at the top tier of the appellation. Founded in the late 18th century and classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the estate has built a global reputation for its powerful, long-lived wines. Legendary vintages such as 1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009 have secured its place among Bordeaux’s most sought-after producers.
