Description
Château Montrose 2003 in magnum format is a powerful Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after classified growths. Known for its intensity, structure, and remarkable longevity, this is a wine that combines the estate’s signature austerity with impressive fruit depth and elegance. In a vintage as distinctive as 2003, Montrose stands out as a serious collector’s bottle with real historical pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark color that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and refined, opening with blackberry, cassis, graphite, roasted herbs, and a touch of tobacco.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with firm, well-integrated tannins and a core of seamless dark fruit. Notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and savory spice unfold slowly, finishing with excellent length and depth. This is a wine built for the long haul and should continue to evolve gracefully for many years, especially in magnum.
Production
Château Montrose’s 95-hectare vineyard surrounds the estate in one continuous block, a rare and historically significant layout in Bordeaux. The soils are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, with warm gravel over clay subsoils that help retain moisture during dry periods, while Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot add softness, aromatic complexity, and color. The grand vin is produced through strict selection at every stage and matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, game, duck breast, or slow-braised dishes with earthy sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if drinking young, or at least 1–2 hours even from magnum to help the wine open fully.
Producer
Château Montrose was established in the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur, and later classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Along with Cos d’Estournel, it is regarded as one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe. The estate has earned a global reputation for producing structured, long-lived wines that are highly prized by collectors and critics alike.
