Description
Château Montrose 2000 is the estate’s flagship wine from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most prestigious classified growths. Built from a strict selection of the best fruit and crafted with remarkable precision, it combines power, elegance, and the depth that has made Montrose one of Bordeaux’s most respected names. This is a wine with serious pedigree and exceptional aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dense ruby-garnet colour, still full of youthful depth. The bouquet is layered and refined, with dark berry fruit, blueberry, crushed stone, floral tones, and subtle oak spice unfolding over time.
The palate is structured and concentrated, with a commanding tannic frame, firm acidity, and impressive balance beneath the power. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, bringing cassis, graphite, and length, while Merlot softens the texture and Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift. Château Montrose 2000 is built for the long haul and can develop beautifully for decades, gaining complexity, finesse, and tertiary notes with age.
Production
Château Montrose sits on a remarkable 95-hectare vineyard in Saint-Estèphe, laid out in a single continuous block around the château and its buildings. The soils are ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, with warm gravel over clay subsoils that help retain moisture in dry periods, while also encouraging the concentration and structure that define the estate’s wines. The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, all harvested and selected with great care.
The grand vin is made from a strict selection of the estate’s best parcels and represents only a portion of total production. It was aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, a élevage that adds polish, complexity, and subtle spice without masking the wine’s natural depth and mineral backbone.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that shines with richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck confit, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and, given its structure and age, decanting is recommended to help it open and reveal its aromatic detail. If well stored, it will continue to evolve gracefully for many years.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and has long stood alongside Cos d’Estournel at the top of the appellation. The estate was established in the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur, and was classified as a Second Growth in 1855. Its rare, contiguous vineyard site is a major part of its identity and contributes to the consistency and precision for which the wines are known. Today, Montrose remains highly regarded by critics and collectors for its powerful, age-worthy wines and its strong historic legacy.
