Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a lucid, mature color with impressive brightness for its age. The bouquet is beautifully layered, with blackberry, blueberry, black truffle, and subtle notes of sous-bois, all delivered with striking precision and elegance. On the palate, the wine is full of backbone yet wonderfully balanced, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant freshness, and a mineral-driven finish that lingers for a long time. It has entered a very expressive stage now, but its concentration and structure suggest it can continue to evolve gracefully for many more years.

Production
The 95-hectare vineyard forms a continuous block around the château, a rare and historically important feature that has remained largely unchanged since the 1855 classification. The terroir is classic Saint-Estèphe: warm gravel over clay, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and helpful in retaining moisture during dry periods. The 1989 vintage was harvested parcel by parcel with strict selection, then matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak, resulting in a wine of precision, power, and complexity.

This is an ideal match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, game dishes, duck breast, or richly flavored mushroom-based plates. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening now to allow the aromas and texture to fully unfold.

Château Montrose dates back to the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur, and it earned its status as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification. Along with Cos d’Estournel, it is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most iconic estates, admired worldwide for its powerful, long-lived wines. Over the years, Montrose has built a reputation for exceptional consistency and has produced several legendary vintages, including 1989, 1990, and 2009.
