Description
Château Margaux 1989 is one of the estate’s most celebrated vintages, a remarkable expression of Bordeaux from a near-perfect growing season. It combines the grandeur and depth expected from this First Growth with a rare sense of openness, elegance, and early harmony that has only deepened with age.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, majestic colour and an alluring bouquet of cassis, ripe blackcurrants, black cherries, and plums, lifted by the floral signatures so closely associated with Margaux. With maturity, layers of violet, cedar, cigar box, leather, truffle, and exotic spice unfold, creating a nose of striking complexity and refinement.
The palate is full-bodied yet beautifully silky, with generous fruit still very much present beneath finely integrated, velvety tannins. Dark berries, spice, tobacco, and a subtle mineral thread carry through to a long, graceful finish. Thanks to its structure and balance, the wine continues to age gracefully, though it is already at a glorious stage of development.
Production
Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grown in the prestigious Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, this wine reflects the estate’s exceptional terroir of gravelly soils and ideal vineyard exposure. The 1989 vintage benefited from excellent ripening conditions, allowing the grapes to reach impressive maturity and concentration before harvest.
The wine was vinified with the care and precision expected at Château Margaux, preserving purity of fruit while building depth, structure, and finesse. Extended ageing in oak helped shape its texture and complexity, allowing the components to integrate into a seamless and highly refined whole.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, flavour-rich dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, venison, or truffled poultry, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C to best show its aromatic breadth and elegance. Decant gently if needed, though older bottles should be handled with care and may only require limited aeration.
Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates and has long been regarded as a benchmark for finesse, perfume, and aristocratic style. As a First Growth in the 1855 Classification, it has played a defining role in the history of the Médoc and continues to set standards for quality in the region. Its greatest wines, including the 1989, have earned worldwide acclaim among collectors and critics alike.
