Description

From one of Barolo’s most revered crus, the E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi 2020 is a poised and finely detailed expression of Nebbiolo in a warm vintage. It marries delicacy with a touch more grip and breadth, capturing Cannubi’s famed elegance while reflecting the generous character of 2020. With only 4,000 bottles produced, this is a focused and highly sought-after Barolo that speaks clearly of place and producer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Cannubi shows a luminous, medium garnet core with classic Nebbiolo transparency and a softly brick-tinged rim. The nose is lifted and precise, with dark cherry and blackcurrant layered over rose petals, crushed violet, pink peppercorn, and a distinct note of white chalk and stone. On the palate, the wine is both refined and structured, with Cannubi’s hallmark finesse gaining extra texture from the warm year. Juicy dark cherry and ripe red berries are wrapped in finely grained tannins that feel slightly more tactile and gritty than in cooler vintages, while the acidity keeps everything bright and mouthwatering. Notes of dried rose, subtle spice and mineral-laced earth carry into a long, elegant finish that remains fresh and sapid. While already approachable with air, this Barolo has very good aging potential and should develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity and silkier tannins.

Production
Sourced from the historic Cannubi hill in the heart of Barolo, this wine draws on a unique combination of calcareous marl, sand, and clay that is famous for giving wines both aromatic lift and refined structure. The Nebbiolo is carefully harvested by hand, allowing Chiara Boschis and her team to select only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters in this warm vintage. In the cellar, traditional Barolo methods are respected with gentle fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and nuanced aromatics, followed by élevage in carefully chosen oak that supports, rather than dominates, the wine’s purity of fruit and mineral profile. The resulting bottling is a precise, terroir-driven expression of Cannubi with limited production, emphasizing quality over quantity.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Cannubi is an excellent match for refined yet flavorful dishes such as braised veal shank (ossobuco), tagliatelle with white truffle, roasted game birds, or slow-cooked lamb with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino, where the wine’s acidity and tannins cut through richness. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to soften the tannins and bring out the floral and mineral nuances; older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving to separate any sediment.

Producer
E. Pira e Figli – Chiara Boschis is one of Barolo’s benchmark estates, renowned for combining meticulous vineyard work with a sensitive, detail-oriented approach in the cellar. When Chiara Boschis took the reins in the late 1980s, she became one of the first women to lead a major Barolo estate and quickly gained a reputation as a perfectionist, elevating the quality of the wines and securing top sites like Cannubi. Today, the winery is celebrated for its precise, vineyard-driven Barolos that balance concentration with elegance and energy. Chiara’s work in organic farming and her role in championing Barolo’s global reputation have made her a key figure in the region, and her Cannubi bottling is widely regarded as one of the cru’s reference expressions.
